Ancient Poems, Ballads, and Songs Of the Peasantry of England by Various ( - ).

This project is complete and all audio files can be found in the catalogue: https://librivox.org/ancient-poems-ballads-and-songs-of-the-peasantry-of-england-by-various/

This traditional, and, for the most part, unprinted literature,—cherished in remote villages, resisting everywhere the invasion of modern namby-pamby verse and jaunty melody, and possessing, in an historical point of view, especial value as a faithful record of the feeling, usages, and modes of life of the rural population,—had been almost wholly passed over amongst the antiquarian revivals which constitute one of the distinguishing features of the present age. While attention was successfully drawn to other forms of our early poetry, this peasant minstrelsy was scarcely touched, and might be considered unexplored ground. There was great difficulty in collecting materials which lay scattered so widely, and which could be procured in their genuine simplicity only from the people amongst whom they originated, and with whom they are as ‘familiar as household words.’ ( Robert Bell)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/649
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

A few notes:

I would very much enjoy to DPL this myself :D.

This is my first time as a BC, but I have recorded sections, DPLd, and am finishing up a solo. This is a collection of poems by different authors, so I did not add them all individually but thought I would just enter them as metadata. Let me know if this is incorrect.

Looks fun!

Looking at the poems, I see that most of them don't have a certain author, some of them are unknown, others anonymous, and some are "thought to be by". My suggestion is to keep the author as various and not mention them individually. :?:

I've also shortened the file name, because the title is looooong! Feel free to change the filename to something else if you see more fitting, but keep it short-ish!

Or you could do like Gutenberg did and just credit the editors, Robert Bell and James Henry Dixon.

I'd like to claim one or two of these. I'll wait until the MW is ready.

One other thing I've just noticed is that because there are more than 99 sections, we'll need three digits in the file names. Campbell, you may want to make sure and change the file name example now, so that it says 001, instead of 01. Trust me, it's no fun having to ask a whole bunch of volunteers to reupload their files because they don't have enough digits!

Hi Campbell!

I know you still have to fill out titles in the MW, but based on the ToC, I'd like to claim these two for now:

The Vanities of Life
The Life and Age of Man

These look very cool ... there may be a few more I'd like to claim along with another reader and do the two parts in duet, but I'll let you know for sure when I hear back from them.

Thnx!!

I would like to join in this project, being descended from many generations of English peasantry.

Do you want the ballads and songs sung or just recited?

Can I claim section 16 - The bold pedlar and Robin Hood. I think I know the traditional tune.

And section 24 - Sir John Barleycorn.

Ok, finished some housework I needed to do and went ahead and updated the MW.

Ok, thanks for the suggestion, I will keep it that way then :D! And the file name looks great.

Good idea, would I credit them as the author instead of 'Various'?

Thanks for catching that! That would have been awful to go back later.

Added you to the MW, it's cool that you have some history with this project.

I think I would like them to be recited, but if someone really wants to sing then I won't stop them :D.
