Hi Marie,

Welcome to Librivox! What name would you like to use for your catalog page? It can be your real name, forum name, or a pseudonym ~ whatever you prefer! We can also link to a personal website or blog.

You did a nice job. :-) There are a couple of things that do need to be fixed.
First the volume is a tad on the high side. If you could bring it down about 3DB that would be great! If you are using audacity, select the entire file, go to effects > amplify, and then slide the little bar to the left, into the negative range.

Also at the end it should say "End of How the Indians Learned to Heal, by Mabel Powers". There are also a couple of very loud clicks or knocks in the silence after the outro that should be deleted.

If you could make these edits, and then re-upload the file with the same name as before that would be great!

Hi Naomi,

Welcome to Librivox! Please let me know what name you what to use for your catalog page.

There are some technical problems that need to be fixed before we can accept this file. This is why we strongly encourage doing a quick 1-minute test before jumping into a longer recording.

Also, we do ask that a file be edited to remove repeats, etc., before submitting for proof listening.

The technical aspects that need to be fixed are:
The bit rate is incorrect - it needs to be 128kbs
We also need to the bit rate to be constant, not variable
The recording is in stereo - we need it to be in mono.
The volume is too quite at 82 DB. We need it to be between 86 and 82 DB.
Last, but perhaps the most serious, there is a loud hum, probably from a fan or electrical source, throughout the recording.
When the file is amplified, it becomes worse and using noise removal on it does not seem to remedy the situation.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I would seriously suggest doing a 1 minute test, and when you get all the technical issues worked out, to re-record the story. Since it is short, that would probably be the easiest thing for you to do in the long run. The background noise is the most serious issue, and probably the hardest to remedy in a finished file.

Here is a link to a video on how to set up your technical specs, as well as some wiki pages:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8JkCgKo3fU
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Newbie_Guide_to_Recording
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=1-Minute_Test

There is also a list of stumbles and repeats that I came across.
There is a little too much silence at the beginning - it should be 1 second or less
@:19 loud click
@2:09 stumble over "repair"
@2:46 long pause between syllables or words
@2:52 pause between "Quite boldly"
@3:01 a repeat "she was"
@3:13-3:15 several repeats
@3:25 "had" needs to be cut out
@3:36 "for her" needs to be cut
@3:46 repeat
@3:53 repeat or stumble
@4:02-4:10 long period of silence that needs to be removed
And at the very end there is a lot of loud clicks. There needs to be five seconds of silence at the end.

There is a set of short stories called 'Just so Stories' by Rudyard Kipling. You can find it here:

https://www.gutenberg.org/files/2781/2781-h/2781-h.htm

May I do one of these, or is this counted as a book?

If so, here it is.

7:08

'How The Camel Got His Hump' from 'Just So Stories' by Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 to 18 January 1936)

[Additional fact - Rudyard Kipling was born in Mumbai, which is where I am from too. So, excuse the heavy Indian accent.
Also, the words punchayet and indaba are Hindi and are pronounced the way I did.)
