Stories of the First American Animals by George Langford (1876 - 1964).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalogue page: https://librivox.org/stories-of-the-first-american-animals-by-george-langford/
Combining beast fable with natural history, this is a highly engaging and informative account of some of the prehistoric mammals that once roamed across North America. Each short story tells us something about a different era of natural history, from the Eocene to the Pleistocene era. Entertaining and easy to understand stories, featuring early ancestors of squirrels, horses, camels, tapirs, elephants, and even manatees, will appeal to people of all ages. (Devorah Allen)
Volunteers outside the USA: George Langford died in 1964. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years and Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955), UNLESS the rule of shorter term applies.
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/storiesoffirstam00lang
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I was a bit unsure of which genres to choose. In the end, I chose both fiction and nonfiction, since it is written as fictional stories in order to illustrate historical facts. I'm happy to change something if I need to. I'll need a DPL.

I'll set this up for you, I won't be able to listen as it is not PD for me, but I really shouldn't need to :D

Anne
OK it's done - I made it fiction, because the animals didn't run around talking to each other and even if they did the didn't speak English :D . We've much anthro-morphology in the children's books section, and they are all under fiction (I hope).

I'm not sure anthro-morphology is the right word or if that is only when animals behave as people in dresses and jackets. But it's a bit like historical fiction it can be true to the era and the people be real people but the story is still made up so it is not history

Ok, I think the MW is ready. We can hang out here as long as you like to see if we can snag a DPL.

I will read all the introductions, but I'll want readers for the stories themselves (that is, the fun part ).

We've been sitting here for a few days without a bite. Think we could go ahead and move to Short Works? I'll either find a DPL over there or advertise for one down the road a bit. I may be able to PL some things myself in the meantime.

I'd like to take a crack at sections 15 through 18. I live on the Chesapeake Bay and my wife works in the Calvert County Marine Museum where they interpret the Miocene era. How appropriate! I await your reply.

Very Respectfully,

Oh, fantastic! Sounds like this is right up your alley.

Since this is your first recording, I'll need to create your reader page before I can sign you up. I'm guessing, since you seem to already be using your real name on the forum, that you'd like to be credited as Dana Paterson? If you'd rather use some other name, though, let me know! Also, if you have a blog or website, I can link to it from your reader page if you give me the URL. :)
