Noah:

I really enjoyed your reading. You have a very clear voice, and read the poems with great expression and with attention to the poet's rhythm.

There are just a few small corrections before I can label them PL-OK:

Section 41

This section is too loud. The acceptable range here at Librivox is 86.5-92dB. This file checked in at 96.4 dB. A good target for your recordings is 89 dB (roughly middle of the range).

Section 42

From 00-0:24 there are a mixture of intros/and outtros.

At 3:00 there is an extra phrase "for they know"

Section 43

There is a length silence from 1:22-1:30.

Should you need help adjusting any of these issues please don't hesitate to ask.

Many thanks,

Philip

Oh man, that was embarrassing! I saved my non-edited copy instead of my edited copy. Whoops. Hopefully these are fixed! Thank you very much for the kind words and your time.

Noah:

I listened again to all of the files, and, they all have the same issue...they are too loud. It occurred to me that you might want some information on our checker software which would give you some benchmarks on how to adjust your amplification before you upload so you don't spend a lot of additional time sending files back and forth.

Here is a site which describes what the checker does and includes a download link:

https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker

Download and install this. I run it on every file I upload before I send it. If the file falls outside the librivox range (86.5-92 dB) then I highlight the vocal track in audacity click amplification from the effects menu and if it's too loud I put a negative number in the box (use 89 dB as a target number) Thus if the checker said your file is 93.4 dB--highlight the vocal track and in the box in the amplification effect input -4.4 (93.4-89) Hit enter and you're ready to re-export and upload. I do this for all of the files that I read and upload here. It doesn't take long, and I know that I'm not going to get a PL note that my amplification isn't right. Having said this, I do want to point out that this is just the way I do it, other people have other ways and I'm certainly no expert.

I've been so busy trying to get caught up with my PL-ing that I haven't welcomed you to Librivox, yet! A big welcome!! Hope you enjoy yourself here. I've been here a little over a year myself, and have had loads of fun.

If there's any way I can help, please don't hesitate to ask.

Many thanks,

Philip

Thank you for the very warm welcome and the continuous help. I'm curious, as a future audio engineer and host of a radio theatre program, is the 86.5-92 dB range a "sweet spot" for the ears when listening? Or is it just a nice constant factor to have, such as the "normalize" tool or a "level" tool?

Thank you!

Once again, how long are the recordings? Please remember to always post the duration of a recording when you post a link so that i can update the magic window :)

I am not 100% sure i got this right but i think that 89 decibel is a normal conversation volume. So thats why we stick to it, plus minus a little. :)
