[COMPLETE]Word Portraits of Famous Writers ed. Mabel E. Wotton - kit
Hi Robert and thank you for these great readings. They are almost flawless, I only found a few technicalities that need to be corrected:rrobinson84 wrote: ↑March 17th, 2018, 2:02 pm I've uploaded the following two audio files, ready for PL:
Section 62, Duration 01:19, Link: https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/wordportraits_062_wotton_128kb.mp3
Section 85, Duration 03:46, Link: https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/wordportraits_085_wotton_128kb.mp3
for Section 62:

I think the sound is a little off on the end of section 18 but it's the closest I seem to be able to get it with Audacity and my limited knowledge.
Section 22 - Lord Chesterfield - 3'51"

The difference in sound is not that noticeable to disturb the pleasure. All is fine.
Thanks

Unfortunately however, there is something wrong with the sound. Parts of the recording are very low in volume and then it is abundant with highly sibilant 's' sounds, which are much louder and, honestly, they pierced my ears
Do you have Audacity ? If you open your file, and then go to "View" and tick "Show Clipping", you will see what I mean. There are excessive red lines throughout the recording, those are the dreaded clippings. Listen for example from 0:27 till 0:29, you will hear two piercing 's' sounds. This excessive clipping has caused your sound to sound more tinny.
Now I don't really know whether a file can be repaired once the clipping has occured. I tried decreasing the volume for 0:27-0:29 for example, still the s sounds just as piercing. And reducing the volume overall is not an option as the rest of the file is way too low in sound anyway.
I would say, although in parts it's not so easy on the ears, we could accept the file as it is, unless you want to re-record. I let you have another listen and decide for yourself. For the moment I mark it with PL notes.
As a helpful advice, here is how I record: I always watch my Audacity lines moving on while I record, and I always have the "Show Clipping" ticked. As soon as I see red lines, I re-record that sentence. This helped me to, by and by, get my voice better under control, keep it more level throughout the entire recording. The difference between the low spikes and the high spikes should never be as large as in your recording. If you don't "spike" in between, it is much easier to amplify or decrease the overall volume later on, if necessary.
As far as I can see, your main problem seems to have been the sibilant 's' sounds, so you could try to be aware of that for your next recordings. With practice you can tone the spikes down in the s. It's a common problem, actually, this letter seems to be quite tricky

Hi Sonia--
Not sure exactly what happened on this round. I will re-record, keeping in mind your suggestions.

absolutely Lora this sound is now totally perfect. I am really curious what went wrong with the last recording Luckily it was a relatively short section, still, it's always annoying having to re-record one entire section. Thank you so much for your diligence.ADKreader1122 wrote: ↑March 20th, 2018, 4:42 pm Here is the link for my re-recorded section 55--John Keble; 5:48 min. in length. Great news! I believe that on the first try I somehow checked "clipping" when I amplified/saved the file. Glad this one is okay. L.
