I've got a question on how to read some stuff in section 31. The title is "Say It With an Asterisk," and the author is literally playing around with asterisks in the writing. Here's an example section:

On page 133 of Baedeker’s Berlin, “Furniture From the Boudoir of Queen Marie Antoinette” has two stars, ** while “Elijah in the Desert,” on page 108, has, in addition to all his other troubles, to worry along with one star.

And that is not the worst of it.

On page 163, “a well-preserved Archæopteryx in Solnhofen slate,” to me by all odds the most interesting object in Berlin, has no star at all! * * *

The asterisks in the passage do not refer to an actual footnote. The first example comes right after he says "two stars" (followed immediately by "**"), so I might be tempted to exclude them, but the last example, "...no star at all! * * *", the asterisks are obviously there on purpose for exaggerated comedic effect. Oh, and to make it clear, he uses "star" and "asterisk" interchangeably throughout the section.

I think I'm going to read all the asterisks as the literal word "asterisk." So, I would read the last sentence in the above quotation as "..has no star at all! Asterisk, asterisk, asterisk." Likewise, I'd read out the two asterisks after "two stars".

Any thoughts? I'm happy to read it however the BC or more experienced readers would recommend.

I've assigned Section 31 to you. I knew it was going to be a challenge. I think your approach is good in those two instances, read them as "asterisk" each time. There are two other similar instances near the end of the section that can be read the same way.

The asterisks that are used, creatively, as dividers in the text should be ignored. There is just no good way to read them that would add anything to the listening experience. There are often visual elements, esp. in poetry, that we just cannot convey in our reading.

And, don't forget the end of book closing.

I almost mentioned the section dividers in my message (I agree--ignoring the asterisks in them sounds like the right approach), but my initial message was already long enough I didn't want to grow and complicate it any further. I do appreciate your posting your first file for evaluation. This will save us some time.
I do love your reading, and not the slight echo mentioned in your test evaluation, at it is perfectly acceptable, so I wouldn't change anything about that. Overall it is quite a pleasant sound.

There are two technical issues, however, that need attention.

The easiest to fix is the ending silence. It need to be 5 seconds and you have only one second. For this, you can just copy and paste the one second to get the five. When recording, just let the recording run for a little longer than five seconds and then trim it.

More serious is the high volume. Our LibriVox target is 89dB with a range of 86-92dB Yours measures 94.3dB This would also evident looking at the wave form which also shows numerous red spikes on my Audacity display.

To correct this, I used the Amplify feature in Audacity and set it to -5, but it would be better to adjust your mic settings to get it closer to the desired 89dB. I usually do some volume adjusting, but the less needed, the better.

I use two tools to help. The first is an Audacity plug-in called ReplayGain. After recording, I just run this and it tells me how many dB adjustment is needed, and then I use the amplify feature in Audacity. When I PL pieces, I check the technical parameters with a little program called Checker written specifically for LibriVox. It checks volume, length, bit rate, etc. There are links to both of these programs in the LV wikis.

Oh, one other thing. Please post the file length along with your link. This one measures 4:44.

Once you have these technical aspects well in hand, you'll be a seasoned pro. You are off to a good start. I look forward to the rest of your recordings.

ETA: Make the necessary changes, then upload the new file under the same name, then post the link here again along with the new file length.
