First, let me say that this is very well read, Nigel. Putting expression into a long prose piece is not easy, but you have done it wonderfully.

There are a couple of technical issues that need attention, however.

First, the volume is quite a bit too high, coming in at 96.1 dB. This is noticeable in listening as the over driving creates quite a bit of distortion. The LibriVox target is 89 db with an acceptable range of 86-92 dB. If you are using Audacity, you can use the amplification function, setting it for -7 to bring the volume closer to the target. It won't get rid of the distortion, but it is still acceptable For future recordings, you will need to make some changes in your set up. Probably the most important is to back down on your mike gain. You can also increase the distance to the mike. Make a few short tests, and check the volume (We use Checker, a program written for LibriVox for which you will find a link in the Guide to Recording).

Second, this recording could benefit from some noise reduction, although probably within acceptable limits. This is also easy to do in Audacity using the noise reduction function. I'd select the last few seconds of silence at the end as your noise sample. There are some good instructions and even videos in our guide on how to do this,

Third, you neglected to record the "outro" and to leave 5 seconds of silence (You have only two).
For this recording, just say, "End of Section One" and leave 5 seconds of silence
(These instructions are in the initial post of this project thread, by the way.)

Finally, there are a couple of loud mike bumps at 4:22 and 13:37. You can't do much about the first one, but you can clip out most of the second one. I don't think you need to record any of this over -- just something to be aware of in your recording.

These are just technical things, and once you have them in hand, you can relax and just enjoy reading, which you do so well.

Let me know if I can help in any of this.

When you have your corrected file, just upload it again with the same file name and post a note here.

Olive was on librivox once and claimed section two.

I would like to submit myself for Section #2 of Anton Tchekhov and Essays by Lev Shestov. I am experienced in audio-recording and will be able to get it to you in a timely manner.
I appreciate your consideration and look forward to working on this with you.
-Olivia Sundeen

I'm thinking she has changed her mind. Sent her pm earlier but no reply.

Orphaned section 2.

Hello Craig,

Thank you for your message. Yes, I am still interested. I just posted my 1-minute test to the forum. I will await feedback on this.

My display name can be...

C.P. Lepage

I will have my website up shortly and will share that with you once it's up.

May I proceed with recording section 2 once I get the okay on my 1-minute test?

All the best,
C.P.
