The May Flower and Miscellaneous Writings by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811 - 1896).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/the-may-flower-and-miscellaneous-writings-by-harriet-beecher-stowe/
Included herein are 35 charming short stories or humorous sketches, some written as exercises for the literary Semi-Colon Club of Cincinnati which Stowe belonged to for years, others published in magazines of the time, and 7 religious poems. Stowe honed her expressive skills on many of these before writing her first serious novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and 30 other books that followed. They showcase her considerable skill even as a young writer, and she made good money doing it, often supporting her family. This collection, named after a flower native to the east coast, likely the Anemone hepatica, or 'May flower', should not to be confused with another collection by Stowe, The Mayflower, which provides sketches of several descendants of the Pilgrims. (Summary by Michele Fry)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5 below. All Sections without names beside them are "up for grabs." NOTE: If one story is divided into two or three sections, for consistency sake, please consider reading them all. Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section(s) you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6 thru 8 below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your section(s) will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do a claimed section, for whatever reason, just let the BC know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/31390
    5. If this is your first recording, please let the BC know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Level of prooflistening: standard (I will DPL all sections except for my own).
Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening!

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3

  • Example ID3 V2 tags It is not necessary to add ID3 tags (it happens automatically at cataloging). However, if you would like to do it, this is how.
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
    Artist: Harriet Beecher Stowe
Title: [## Title], as shown in MW
Album: The May Flower and Miscellaneous Writings

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: kathrinee
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.

I can set this up :)

ETA:
Here we go! I shortened the filenames a bit and changed the part where it says to add 10 seconds of silence at the end of recordings longer than 30 minutes (now 5 seconds is fine for all recordings).

Thanks bunches, Kathrine. I will fill in the MW today and tomorrow. I'm delighted to collaborate with you again.
I think the filename should include miscwritings, or say may_flower, because Stowe has another book entitled The Mayflower, which I intend to BC at a later date, whose files are more properly named "mayflower". I also think hbstowe should stay, because her son, Charles Edward Stowe, also wrote books and essays, as did her husband, Calvin Ellis Stowe.
Once the project is catalogued, these file names may disappear from LV, but they remain on my computer forever and I would like to thus distinguish them.
Would it be alright to use my suggestions?

Likewise, MsFry :)

Yes, of course we can use your suggestions for filenames. I didn't realize they were so well thought out  - I was just imagining the scope for misspellings.. :) But, yes, lets go with yours. I'll change it right back again!

ETA:
did I get it right?

Kathrine, as all these are separate stories (some well known), can we fix it so they can be individually found by title in the search bar, as with our other short story collections? I hope so and if so, do I have to do something in the meta-data column of the MW?

I understand your with to make the stories/poems individually searchable like we do in the collections, but no, unfortunately, we can't. Since all the texts are from one textsource (book), it is just not a collection. Sorry. So, no, no need to do anything to the meta-data :)

I suppose if I like a story well enough to want it findable by title , I can record it for one of the collections. :)
