Short Science Fiction Collection 058 by Various ( - ).

Science fiction is a genre encompassing imaginative works that take place in this world or that of the author’s creation where anything is possible. The only rules are those set forth by the author. The speculative nature of the genre inspires thought and plants seeds that have led to advances in science. The genre can spark an interest in the sciences and is cited as the impetus for the career choice of many scientists. It is a playing field to explore social perspectives, predictions of the future, and engage in adventures unbound into the richness of the human mind. ( A. Gramour)
This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/short-science-fiction-collection-058-by-various/
  • This collection is for science fiction recordings of less than 70 minutes in duration

    Collection Requirements:

    • Text must be in the Public Domain (with expired copyright, or published before 1923)
    • Each recording must contain a complete story
    • Claiming stories is unnecessary (duplicates are held for future collections)
    • There is no deadline (when finished, post to the currently open collection)
For help with LibriVox requirements and policies see the Recording Notes topic

    Finding Texts:

Stories found on the Project Gutenberg US site are cleared for recording
Gutenberg’s Science Fiction Bookshelf is a good starting point.
Gutenberg’s science fiction content is not always cataloged as such (search by other criteria)
Gutenberg plain text, us-ascii, uncompressed files of less than 78 KB or 10,000 story words can generally be read in less than 70 minutes
Project Gutenberg continues to add science fiction magazines such as The Galaxy and Astounding Stories. There you can view the fantastic covers and illustrations that accompany the stories. A compilation of PD stories from Galaxy magazine can be found here: Galaxy PD
The Librivox Main Page also contains pages listing Gutenberg stories appropriate to this collection:
The Science Fiction Short Stories Science Fiction Short Stories page shows stories that can be read in less than 60 minutes.
The Science Fiction by Women bookshelf in Gutenberg can be found here: SF by Women
The Science Fiction Shortish Stories page shows longer stories that may be read in less than 60 minutes depending on your reading speed.
The LibriVox Short Science Fiction Index displays stories already in the LibriVox catalog (Note: duplicates welcome)
A Librivox discussion and suggestion thread on science fiction in the public domain and the new arrivals in PG can be found here: List of Early Science Fiction
Stories from sources other than Gutenberg require evidence of public domain status. For more information see the Copyright and Public Domain page of the LibriVox wiki .

    File Requirements:
    • Recording must be a monaural MP3 file with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and a bit rate of 128 Kbps.
    • File name must be formatted entirely in lower case letters and use under-bars to separate values as in: ssf058_titleinoneword_authorlastname_readersinitials_128kb.mp3 (e.g. ssf058_nightfall_asimov_abc_128kb.mp3) Exclude definite articles like “The” from the file name.
    • Recording must contain LibriVox announcements at beginning and end:

    Beginning Announcement:
“[story title] by [author]. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name]".
Then repeat: "[Title], by [author]. Translated by [translator]."

    Ending Announcement:
"End of [title], by [author] Translated by [translator]."
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Recordings of less than 30 minutes require 5 seconds of silence at the end of the file
    • Recordings of more than 30 minutes require 10 seconds of silence at the end of the file
    • All files must have ID3 V2 tags that populate the following 3 fields:

    Title: [story title]
Artist: [author name] (trans. by [translator name])
    Album:Short Science Fiction Collection 058

For help with ID3 V2 tags see the What is ID3 page of the LibriVox wiki.

I would like to try The Dwindling Years By LESTER DEL REY --
(https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/50103)

It's about 5633 words, which should bring it in under 60 minutes.

Thanks

Hi Dale,
It looks good. The length is fine. If you ever have one that you want to do that is quite longer than 70 minutes, it can be divided into two files.
Cheers!
Amy

Hi. Here is Lester Del Ray's Dwindling Years... it is 34:19 https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/ssf058_dwindeling_years_del_ray_dg_128kb_mp2.mp3

I am still having some difficulty with the naming conventions, but, given time, I will get it. (so, for instance, I don't know why there is am "mp2" just before the mp3...

Anyway, I hope this is word perfect. If not, leave me a message, and I will make corrections.

Thanks for your time.

Hello again.

I just realized that half the information I was supposed to include was missing. So we will try again.

Hi: I am not sure what the rules are for submitting more than one story for a project. But here is another one. (if there is a rule against this, save this file for the next short SF?)

I know some of this should be in tags, but my recording program doesn’t tag. Sorry. dg

Hi again:

I am sorry. The file name was not right, so I have changed it. The new LV name is

https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/ssf058_diplomatic_immunity_robert_sheckley_dg_128kb.mp3

All the other information is correct.

I am code-switching between 4 different organizations' file name requirements, and sometimes I don't get it right, but as I have more experience with LV, it will become more automatic.

Thanks
Dale

PS: I have what we used to call a novella (about 4 hours. Not really short, but not a whole book either.) Any suggestions?

Hi Dale,
Thank you for your story. I will PL soon. I am sure you will be old hat at all the Librivox stuff soon.
You can submit as many stories as you want to this collection.
You can record your novella as a solo project. There are a lot of novellas in the catalog. Here is a guide to setting up a solo project:
http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/How_To_Become_A_Book_Coordinator
If there is anything else you need, please let me know.
Cheers!

Hi Amy:

I have another short one --

The Project Gutenberg EBook
The Hour of Battle, by Robert Sheckley
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/29445/29445-h/29445-h.htm
Read by Dale Grothmann
Short Science Fiction #058

https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/ssf058_thehourofbattle_sheckley_dg_128kb.mp3
14:20 long

I may do one or two more short ones. Not sure yet.

Anyway, thanks for all your time. And let me know if you need anything.

Hi Dale,
The file name was close. You have to drop the "the" and "a" in these file names, so ssf058_hourofbattle_sheckley_dg_128kb will do it.
For this file, there are two updates needed. Please noise clean it, and then use the compressor effect to bring down some peaks that should take it down from 91 db to 89. The 91 is in range but since you are making an update it would be good to rein it in.
If you could use this filename when you re-upload, it would be great.
Thanks!
Amy

Hi:

Sorry about that. I have run a noise reduction and given the file a new name and a haircut. The new name is

https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/ssf058_hourofbattle_sheckley_dg_128kb.mp3

All the other information is the same.

Thanks for listening.
