Work by Jean Ingelow (1820 - 1897)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/work-by-jean-ingelow/
Jean Ingelow was an English poet and novelist, who gained sudden fame in 1863. She also wrote several stories for children. This sonnet is taken from Poems by Jean Ingelow, In Two Volumes, Volume II. by Jean Ingelow (1896) (Summary by Wikipedia)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.
Project Code: fJX9v5UH

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave ½ to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
Work by Jean Ingelow, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
Like coral insects multitudinous
The minutes are whereof our life is made.
They build it up as in the deep's blue shade
It grows, it comes to light, and then, and thus
For both there is an end. The populous
Sea-blossoms close, our minutes that have paid
Life's debt of work are spent; the work is laid
Before our feet that shall come after us.
We may not stay to watch if it will speed,
The bard if on some luter's string his song
Live sweetly yet; the hero if his star
Doth shine. Work is its own best earthly meed,
Else have we none more than the sea-born throng
Who wrought those marvellous isles that bloom afar.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Before our feet that shall come after us.
Hmm, I wonder if this is an error by PG, or in publishing, or if I'm just wide of the mark. I think it ought to be "before their feet", but I've not found another source to compare against. Google Books has two "preview" scans of this work, but this poem is not among those they'll allow me to see.
I'll be out for a bit on this last weekend of April, but still checking in as I get the chance. I will try to follow up on Monday, with anything I can't do on the go.

Hi Redrun,

Textual scholarship is always such a treasure hunt! Here's what I've found very quickly: the PG text is claiming to use the 1896 Roberts Brothers publication in Boston. An 1871 collection of Ingelow, also published by Roberts Brothers, uses 'our', as below:
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc2.ark:/13960/t3319s92t&view=1up&seq=75
An 1882 Longmans, Green volume (London) uses 'their':
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924064978533&view=1up&seq=111

I don't know much about textual criticism in relation to Ingelow's work, but if she had differing texts in US and UK editions she wouldn't be the first author to do so.
