Hi Leah and Welcome to Librivox :)

My name is Jim and I am the friendly neighborhood Dedicated Proof Listener (DPL) for this project. I have just a couple of short comments regarding this recording.
  • Firstly, your overall recording level is 91.9 dB. This is within specifications and does not need to be corrected. However, for future recordings, you will want to ensure that your recording level is between 86 dB and 92 dB. 89 db is considered "ideal." Our intrepid coordinator for this project has created a video that makes this very easy to accomplish: How I Always Hit 89dB With One Click https://youtu.be/aSKR55RDVpk

Are you familiar with the Checker tool? I use it on every file prior to uploading. https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker
  • @ 0:49 there is some missing text "What do you want"
  • @ 8:22 there is a silence of about 2.5 seconds. While silence between sections can be effective, listeners get antsy if the gap is over 2 seconds. I try to keep mine no longer than 1.5.
  • Finally, your "Read by..." should only be in the intro -or- in the outro, not both. Please remove either one.
After you have made your edits, please reupload using the same filename and then leave a note here in the thread.

Thanks.
Jim in Ohio

I will be away from the studio from April 21st through April 28th.

Hi Victoria,

Just two small technical items I need to mention.

First, please remember to list the length of your recording in mm:ss form when you post about an upload. This is used as a part of the publishing process to ensure that nothing gets missed.

Secondly, at the beginning of the file there should be a silence of between 0.5 and 1.0 seconds and at the end there should be 5 seconds of silence. I heard 0.8 at the beginning, which is perfect, but there was no trailing silence.

Please add 5 seconds of silence to your recording and then reupload using the same filename. When you have done that, please drop a note here in the forum.

Okay, the ending silence is now right where it should be, but you now have 1.8 seconds for the beginning silence which was okay before at 0.8.

Hello,

I am Jim, the friendly neighborhood dedicated proof listener (DPL) for this project.

I heard no repeats or missing text, so that is good. There were, however, a couple of technical things that need some attention.

While not needing correction for this file, in the future you will want to keep an eye (or ear) on plosives. From the LibriVox Wiki:
Advice for avoiding plosives: If you use a headset mic, try to keep the microphone near your chin or near your nose so that your breath doesn't puff right into it. Place the tip of your finger on the microphone and puff some air out of your nose, then out of your mouth. If your finger's out of the breeze, the mic is, too, and the recording will be fine. If you use a desk mic, you may make or buy a "pop screen" to avoid plosives
The volume is 92.8dB, which is too high. We aim for between 86 - 92dB, and 89dB is "ideal".
Our coordinator for this project has prepared an excellent video on the subject: How I Always Hit 89dB With One Click https://youtu.be/aSKR55RDVpk
Are you aware of the Checker tool? I use it on every file before I submit. You can use the checker tool to verify volume and other settings https://cgjennings.ca/projects/checker/

Your file is missing part of the intro and I did not hear any of the outro. If you look at the beginning of the thread, you will see:
Intro to recording:
Leave less than 1 second of silence at the beginning.

Say:
"Section # of UNCLE WIGGILY'S STORY BOOK. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit librivox.org." [Optional: "Read by your name."] "UNCLE WIGGILY'S STORY BOOK, by Howard R. Garis. Section Title."
End of recording:
Say:
"End of section #." [Optional, and if not stated in the intro: "Read by your name, city, date."]
Finally, at the beginning of the file there should be a silence of between 0.5 and 1.0 seconds and at the end there should be 5 seconds of silence. I heard 4.3 and 6.8 seconds respectively.

Please make these small changes and re-export to MP3. Then reupload using the same file name. Do not forget to post a note here in the thread when you are done.
