When There Is Peace, by Henry Austin Dobson (1840 - 1921)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/when-there-is-peace-by-henry-austin-dobson/
LibriVox volunteers bring you 17 recordings of When There Is Peace by Henry Austin Dobson.
This was the Weekly Poetry project for June 26, 2022.
-----
Henry Austin Dobson (18 January 1840 – 2 September 1921) was an English poet, essayist, and biographer. He is commonly known as Austin Dobson. Dobson first gained attention by appearing in St. Paul's magazine, published by Anthony Trollope, and he gathered enough material to publish his first book of verse in 1873, Vignettes in Rhyme. Dobson is perhaps best known for his promotion and use of European metrical forms such as the ballade, rondel, rondeau and villanelle, but all written in English. (Summary by mungojerry311)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
When There Is Peace by Henry Austin Dobson, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
"When there is Peace our land no more
Will be the land we knew of yore."
Thus do our facile seers foretell
The truth that none can buy or sell
And e'en the wisest must ignore.

When we have bled at every pore,
Shall we still strive for gear and store?
Will it be Heaven? Will it be Hell,
When there is Peace?

This let us pray for, this implore:
That all base dreams thrust out at door,
We may in loftier aims excel
And, like men waking from a spell,
Grow stronger, nobler, than before,
When there is Peace.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Yes, a very slow but very interesting interpretation. However, there is too much silence at the beginning and end (1.6 and over 7 seconds respectively). The silence at the beginning should be 1 second at most and at the end it should be 5 seconds. Please fix that as soon as you can. Other than that, everything else is fine. Welcome to LibriVox, we're glad to have you here!

I asked my librarian about the noise, and she said, "no one would come here
if they weren't allowed to talk out loud." So I read out loud.

Je lis à haute voix car refléchir fait trop de bruit!
