Hey Sonia I managed to get 102 done and had a lot more fun than I thinking it was going to be.

I have a new respect for this community and the work they do after working on 102.

I also got a new mic, you'll have to tell me how it sounds. also how did I do reading?

thank you Joanna, another fine section and beautifully narrated :) Can be marked PL ok right away. Here is a picture of the infamous skull, seems he is not sitting on the top stair anymore  https://www.manchestersfinest.com/articles/haunted-manchester-the-screaming-skull-of-wardley-hall/
strangely enough, the story about the owner of the skull is completely different. :hmm:

LV can be addictive ;)

oh yes, the recording part is the smallest part actually, as the editing phase can take up to 3 or 4 times as long if you want to do it well. So starting with shorter sections is not a bad thing, to test the waters.
I also got a new mic, you'll have to tell me how it sounds. also how did I do reading?
https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/hauntedhomes_102_ingram_128kb.mp3
the microphone sounds fine to me, it's not bad. You didn't read too fast, so it was easy to follow along with the story. So for your first section, it was really very good :) What I especially liked was the more dramatic rendering in court when you had Dorothy speak her curse. It makes the section very lively and I personally enjoy such bits.

Now to the technical aspects and PL notes. There are a few things that need correcting before I can mark it ok. Nothing difficult, so please do not re-record it all again from scratch. We always prefer Spot editing to re-recording as it will save time for both the reader and the DPL.

Here is what you need to do:

> the volume is much too loud (97 db). We accept between 86 and 92 dB, with preferred average of 89. You can simply decrease the volume with -7 to get into a good average. Likewise the background noise was too high, but once the volume is decrease the background noise was less audible as well. You could download the Checker which will tell you the volume of the finished file: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker

> at 0:55: (p. 392) "as there does not appear to be" – this part was difficult for me to understand as you were speaking less loud and more hurried and slurred here, so you stumbled a bit over the words. It might benefit from re-recording this part only. Simply open a new recording window, record the line, adjust volume and noise-clean, copy/paste it into the right slot in your masterfile.

> at 3:54: (p. 394) "the two skulls were burned again and again" – you say "buried", which changes the meaning of the statement

> at the end: we require a standard of 5 seconds of silence, could you add 2 more here please

That's it. Simply reupload with the exact same filename, so the old file gets replaced by the new one. Oh and please always mention the length of your file when posting a link, it makes it easier for the BC to update the Magic Window.

Thank you

Hello Sonia that's good to hear about the mic and how I did. :D Let me be honest reading what Dorothy's said was my favorite part of 102, I couldn't stop laughing the first times tried to read "thou thinkest thou hast managed grandly"

I think I fixed all the problems that you said. but there one thing i was a little confused about with the checker it says "The audio has a moderate level of background noise and might benefit from cleaning. (Alternatively, you may have forgotten to leave several seconds of silence at the end of the recording.)" but I removed any like loud background noise's, and after re-listening to it I couldn't any background noise, also i add a little more than than 5 seconds of silence to the end so I'm just a little confused on what it means.

https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/hauntedhomes_102_ingram_128kb.mp3

length is 4:47

oh and I had a little bit of trouble getting my voice to sound the same as the original with the "the 2 skulls where burned again and again" if it doesn't sound right i can go back and work one it more.
Hope you've had a good day :D

I ran your file through checker and it didn't give me a warning. Your noise level seems to be about 43 dB, it could be less, but I also don't hear anything disturbing, so it's fine. No need to re-run a noise-cleaning effect.

However, you have 7 seconds of silence at the end now, could you please cut them to the above-mentioned 5 seconds ? If you zoom into the audio waves, it's much easier to see how many seconds there are. I usually zoom in so that I can see segments of 1 second on the ruler above the wave-window.
oh and I had a little bit of trouble getting my voice to sound the same as the original with the "the 2 skulls where burned again and again" if it doesn't sound right i can go back and work one it more.
no it sounds excellently  The difference in sound is really not much audible. We don't always sound exactly the same all throughout a text, and your newly recorded sentences are really very good. (you should have heard my first attempts :? )

Thanks

thank you, David, for two more engagingly narrated stories. Souter Fell indeed reminded me of that previous story you had. There must be a flurry of ghostly armies traipsing around the Highlands.

Section 128 is straight PL ok.

A few small notes on 135 though:

> from 2:37 to 2:39: (p. 569) between "over the cleft as before" and "all the family saw this" - I would cut the pause a bit here
> at 5:06: (p. 570) "volume 2" – you say "volume 1"
> from 5:59 to 6:02: between "the theme will be found" and "end of section 135" - again the pause is a bit long
> at the end: you have nearly 8 seconds of silence, could you cut them down to the standard 5 please ?

thanks

thank you, Kerry, another creepy story :? You are reading it quite dramatically, I enjoyed the thrill.

Only one small note this time:

> at 7:41: "end quote" – you did not say a "quote" at the beginning of the letter (which starts at 1:24) so there is no point in making an end quote. I would opt for cutting this bit, it's easier than recording and inserting "quote". Marking quotes is optional, I personally never do it in my recordings. The choice is yours

Thanks

yes you are right, best not clutter the project threads with lengthy discussions of this kind. Also, this thread will not be active anymore after cataloguing, so the info may vanish as well. It would be more helpful for other readers if they could read up on these suggestions in the Help Forum. I will select the posts from this discussion and move them over into a new thread. :)

Update: the new thread is here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=90240 in case you want to continue the discussion.

BTW I will also check out your solution which might help me with my second laptop, which has a very low sound quality.

thank you, Sue, now this one was hair-raising again  I can't believe these people still lived and slept there in the house with so many disturbances. And that the children get used to it :hmm: Excellently narrated :)

The background noise is a little bit loud in parts. Also I see you are just at the upper accepted volume limit of 92 dB. I would suggest, decrease the overall volume by -2 to get closer to the perfect average of 89, and in the process the noise will also be significantly reduced.

Thanks

Sonia
