Myths and Legends Around the World (in English) Collection 13, by Various

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/myths-and-legends-around-the-world-13/
This collection is dedicated to recordings of short mythical or legendary works which are in the Public Domain. The stories tell of legends, heroes, myths, and ancient lore from many different cultures. (Summary by Lynette Caulkins)
Please choose and record any short myth or legend that is a short story in the public domain. It may be from a stand-alone book or a single chapter from a book. For clarification of what it means for a work to be "in the public domain," see this section of the LibriVox Wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Copyright_and_Public_Domain. Try to stay with works that run less than 60 minutes. You may read up to 2 selections per volume in this collection. You may use 2 sections for one myth/legend if the story is too long for one section. Multiple versions of the same story are welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your topic already; we're happy to hear the version you found, too. :) Please note that in this collection we do not do reservations on sections, as is typically done with LibriVox group projects. If you wonder about the suitability or public domain status of a story you want to record, feel free to ask questions in the discussion before you do the work of a recording. If this collection fills before you are able to do that recording - No Worries! - the next collection will be open for you very soon. :)

Each reader is limited to two stories per collection.
After 12 sections are submitted and approved, we will catalog the collection and make it available to the public.

Here is a list of sources that still have chapters available: Potential Sources for Myths and Legends Around the World *Please note that you are absolutely welcome to use other public domain sources. (In fact, bonus points for finding a new source, particularly if it contains cultures not yet represented on the list!)

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hello- I would like to read a section from the book "Indian Fairy Tales" , selected and edited by Joseph Jacobs. I wanted to read the chapter 14 titled "A lac of rupees for a bit of advice" . I am based out of India. Is that fine?

Thank you very much for starting Collection 13 off, Ahana :) I have your story loaded and queued for prooflistening.

I do need to have the system make your Reader Page. What name would you like us to use on that? This is the page the public can see when they look at audiobooks in the Catalog that you have contributed to. Some of use our real name, some use our forum board name (the one you've posted here with), and others make another nickname.

Just let me know what you want for your Reader Page. :)

Thanks, Ahana!

Here is your Reader Page: Ahana M.

You'll see that it will list every project you work on, both completed and in progress. It also has a link to lists of all the sections that are assigned to you for either recording or prooflistening. It comes in quite handy. :)

(I have provided a link to your Reader Page in the post above this one)

Your story is so nicely read, and your voice is perfect for it!

There is one place that needs editing. Here is your PL Note:

If you open your file and zoom the track in until you can see the half-second tick marks, at 13:39 to 13:41 there is a false start that should be clipped out: "The king of this daughter. . . "

Otherwise, everything is good!

Well, welcome to LibriVox!! Nice to have you with us.

And no apologies! I was TOTALLY clueless when I started out, and I remember that very well.

For this edit, all you need to do it clip a short portion out. To do that, open your recording. (If you don't still have your own file on your computer, just right-click the "Listen" link on your section in the Magic Window and download the file from there.)

Are you using Audacity to do your recording? That's the only software I'm familiar with. If so, when you open the file, the Audacity window will show the entire track, which is almost 19 minutes long. Click on the Zoom tool (a plus sign in a magnifying glass) 5 or 6 times, until the numbers across the top of the track change from

0 | | | | 5 | | | | 10 | | | | 15 . . .

to

0.0 | 1.0 | 2.0 | 3.0 . . .

(The track will be showing you the sound waves at a scale where the half-seconds have tick marks on that top ruler.)

Now, slide the bottom scrolling handle thingy over until you see 13:39.0

You'll see that there's a portion of sound waves under that area that lasts almost to 13:41.0. Use your mouse to highlight only the soundwaves of that phrase. If you push Play while that is highlighted, you should hear only "The king of this daughter." Click "Delete." It's magically gone, and your story is all fixed. :)

(I love easy edits like this, where nothing has to happen but to remove a bit.)

Now you need to Export to MP3 just like the first time - you can keep the name exactly the same. Upload it into LibriVox the same way, again, and post that you've corrected the file. It will have a new length of time since you clipped out a phrase, so don't forget to include that in your post. (You only need to put the minutes and seconds, not the extra decimal, though - like 18:28 or whatever it becomes.)

Let me know if I haven't been clear with something. :) We're happy to have your help on this project.

Let me know if done right now. Happy to try again if not. Thanks, Ahana

Very nicely edited! A Lac of Rupees for a Bit of Advice is PL OK  Thank you so much for this fine story to start Collection 13. I hope to "see" you again in LibriVox. :)

There is one more thing to figure out that has nothing to do with the recording itself:

Your link for your upload is not quite how it needs to be. The URL for your file should have been this:

https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/mlaw013_lacofrupees_josjac_am_128kb.mp3

I was able to fish out the "real" URL for the file, but a lot of BCs won't know how to do that.

When you upload a file, if you right click on the file name itself when it turns blue, it will give you the file's actual URL.

If you copy the URL of the uploading page from the browser bar, it will give you the link that only takes a person to the uploading page without your recording attached to it, and most BCs will ask you to reupload the file to get the link they need.

Have fun in LibriVox! There are many group projects you can look though to help with, and of course, if you'd like, you can still submit one more story to Collection 13 of Myths and Legends Around the World.

Hello there. I would love to read Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome. I would want to read the Introduction, Cronus, and Theories As To The Origin of Man. I will record it later today. I would also love to be credited in the Catalog.

Thanks for considering.
