Hello,
My name is Eileen Kelly an I am looking forward to participating in this fun and noble cause.
i am beginning in voice over work and this should be a good fit for me. Hope to begin with some children's works and some poetry.
I am from Ohio, am middle-aged, have a strong, warm, authentic voice- I am told.
Can't wait to interact with other like minded volunteers to get the words out.

Welcome at LibriVox, Eileen.

When you like to do poetry, you could instead of Peter Piper also choose some short poem for the one-minute-test and give it to one of the collections then :) The 1-minute-test is not an audition; it's purpose is to see if the tech specs are right.

Hello!
I hope this is a valid link to my one minute test. I was unable to copy and paste the link. I copies and typed it. Please let me know how it goes.
Or doesn't.
Thank you,
Newbie,
Eileen Rose Kelly

Almost :)

A valid link looks like this:
https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/test_ekelly_.mp3 The "https://" in the beginning of a link is important.

If you click on the link with the right mouse button (on a right-handed mouse), you will get a little popup menu where you can click "copy link location" then. This link you can paste simply with "Ctrl - V".

Let's see at your test:

I liked your reading :) There are only some technical things to fix:
  • Volume is too high. We aim at 89 dB inside a range of 86 to 92 dB. You can check it from within Audacity with ReplayGain or with a little Javascript called "Checker" (see sig.)
  • Bitrate should be 128 kbps constant
You can set mono and the right bitrate on exporting: http://cisdem.de/librivox/AudaCity_2_2_pics/export.png
It also sounds as if you applied a bit too much of noise reduction. That's just mentioned if you want to perfect your recording.

For the bitrate and volume, please edit the file, load it up and post the link here in the thread again, thank you :)

Questionable link again

Hello again,
I tried to copy and paste again. Failed. Cannot right click on my notebook. No mouse.
Tried crtl +py and ctrl +v to paste.
Recorded Robert Frost poem for a test, potential submission.
I have adjusted intake volume levels, borderline high now.

Thank you for your patience!

Really feeling like a newbie!

Does this work?
The link works fine and almost all of the tech specs are fine now :)

You can set it lower, it was a bit high already on the first admission and is still over the required limit :)

There is a strange, wobbling sound now that I didn't hear in the first recording. What did you do different on the both recordings? I becomes better in the end of the recording, do you have some noice-cancelling in the microphone going on? It might be better to switch that one of and clean noise out on editing; those noise-cancelling features sometimes work strange.

Oh, no, I don't want to make you feel like a newbie. We all started at one point (and learn something new every day) and audio software and recording seems especially complicated to me. You read lovely and I am sure we'll get it in the end, don't give up!

As for the reading, there is a double at about 52 seconds; if you can manage to get rid of that wobbling sound and would like to submit the file, you'd need to cut that out :). For the rest, I didn't have the text, but it sounds fine.

:hmm: The beginning and end silences are too long anyway. If you use Audacity you could just mark the beginning, for example, got to "Generate - Silence", click on the arrow for the dropdown and choose "hh:mm:ss + hundreds" for the time. Then type in 0.5, that generates a silence of 0.5 seconds instead of the marked thing.

Same in the end, but only type in 5 seconds instead of 0.5.

Usually I don't like the artificial silence, but thus we could rescue the recording, as the wobbling doesn't show up that much as soon as you speak. You only need to edit beginning and end, I think, in the middle it wouldn't sound natural with generated silences.

Thanks Monica,
I appreciate all your feedback.
I ended up recording a new one. Not as loud and less background noise. I believe the sound you heard was the furnace coming on. It has a whirling sound.
Anyway, I posted the new one on the fortnightly forum, because of time limitation.
I will continue to make attempts with fortnightly poems.
Thanks again!
Eileen

I seems that you loaded up the loud one, incedentally.

It is ok with me if you want to deliver the poem for the fortnightly poem, but please with the suggested edits, or the newly recorded one, whichever is the better. And please into the right folder. The "real" recordings require a different folder than the tests, depending on the MC (metacoordinator). It is written in the first post of every thread.

The recording I found in the fortnightly poems thread was exactly the one with the whirling sound and the long beginning/end.

Oh, don't worry too much about that one. Of course it is important to deliver the poem inside deadline, but always keep in mind that a new poem is to come and if you really miss a deadline, you can still deliver the poem in one of the other collections, like viewtopic.php?f=19&t=73084 or (but do not deliver the same recording for two collections - once published, you need to record new for a second version, there is no recycling here :) )
