A Time Honoured Way To Start Here is with a Weekly Poem ... last week's is just winding down, so you'll need to watch for the thread for this week's, if interested. It's a relatively quick, low pressure way to get into the catalogue quickly, and highly recommended. (I myself started with that giant among literary works, The Cow, by Robert Louis Stevenson.)
