I agree with a good deal of what you said and want to clarify a couple of my comments. In regard to ReplayGain, I did eventually find a download that works on my Mac, but I have little use for it. I can hit the target levels easily enough with my export of mp3 from Audacity. I find that if the file uses compression then normalizing to -3 or -4 will hit within the target and if compression is not used, -2 might be about right. That is general, of course, and usually depends on the file content.
In regard to Audacity, I have become much more familiar with it on my Mac, but still have several DAWs that surpass it in flexibility. It is a great program for no money and the manual is actually better than some that are quite expensive. It is a fine go-to app for LV.
In regard to people who want to get better, yes there are some that don't care. Still, my offer of help comes with advice about using mics, not just buying them; using EQ, not buying better plugins; simple sound treatment that can be done with little money; reducing noise in the recording environment rather than relying on the noise reduction effect in Audacity.
Sometimes (in fact, rather often) the best mic for a voice is not the most expensive one. I have heard decent recordings using Garage Band and the built-in mic on an iPad. To do that, the iPad must be positioned just so, still, the sound was okay.
But for people who do want to improve and are passionate about reading, I can sometimes, listen to a files and make useful suggestions. For example: recording in a live room so the sound is echoey and distant. In many cases, re-positioning the mic correctly would improve the recording a lot and that is a fix that costs no money. I am always happy to help those who are willing to help themselves and often costs nothing. For example, if someone sent me a file and asked me to improve it, and if I could actually improve it, I would be most happy to share the procedure with the person.
In regard to Linux, although I like it and have tried Ubuntu, I find that I don't really need to use a different OS. If I am patient (as in the case of ReplayGain) I can usually get something to work on the Mac. Of course, I could use the dual boot option on Mac with Windows as well, but I work faster and more efficiently not going in too many directions.
