Hi folks! My name is Mike and I live in Georgia near the southern end of the Appalachian mountains. I love to read and enjoyed reading out loud to my son many years ago so when I found this place I thought it would be a lot of fun :)

However, it seems I've done things a bit backwards. When I finally decided to "do it", I was getting ready to go to my part time DJ job and decided to pick something quick as a first try. You can hear my first attempts at: http://www.kauffmann.net/audio/

Of course, I figured I'd "jump right into a solo project" on "some subject I really love." But now I'm reading that neither choice, much less both, is recommended early on so I guess it's time to rethink what I can do to help out.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to helping out on some joint projects. In the mean time, I'll look for a small subject to which I don't have any emotional ties for a beginning solo project.

I would highly recommend not ever choosing a solo project on a subject you don't enjoy. How are you going to motivate yourself to read the book if you're not excited about it? Also, the listener will definitely be able to tell if you're not interested in the reading. If you're looking for some practice before you work hard on a full book, try signing up for one of the collaborative works to read a chapter or two here and there.

Welcome to LibriVox, and I hope you enjoy whatever you decide to do :)

Hi!

We do recommend starting with something very short -- a minute or two -- just so you can get the wrinkles ironed out of your recording set-up. Also, recording a a full-length novel is a lot more work that most new volunteers realize -- but if you're raring to go and you have something picked out that you love, go for it! And perhaps post a quick sample over in "Listeners Wanted" so we can check for typical (and easily solved) newbie problems such as background noise or low volume :)

Most of all, do something you enjoy and have fun!

Technically you sound absolutely fine.
Possibly a little neutral but then they were fairly bland poems you were reading so difficult to really 'feel' them.
I reckon you could dive straight in and do a solo if you wish.
Check out the going solo section and see how other folk go about it.
Then browse something like http://gutenberg.org to find something you'd enjoy.

You have a fine clear voice.

I look forward to hearing your recordings

Kind regards

Jim

It's good to have you hear, Mike ... enjoy yourself, whatever you choose to do!
There's honestly no such thing as a stupid question -- but I'm afraid I can't rule out giving a stupid answer : : To Posterity and Beyond!
