Hi, my name is Dave, I'm a sophomore at Chapman University in Orange, CA (but an Idaho native). I really enjoy reading and recording, so I asked the good folks at Project Gutenberg how I could contribute audiobooks, and they sent me here. What an amazing community, I'm glad to be a part!

I also Really enjoy reading aloud and being read to. And I love hanging out with others of like likes.

I'm a music major, and fairly experienced with all the technical aspects of making it, so I know my way around recording. I really enjoy sci-fi/fantasy, but I'll read most anything. I'll read the nutrition labels on cereal boxes just for my own enjoyment.

I won't be starting to record until I get set up again for the new semester in a few weeks. Until then, I'll get to know my way around LibriVox and how things work here.

Oh, one question. When I read books or chapters or poems for these projects, do I just read straight through (using proper inflection and tone of voice of course, not monotone), or can I do crazy dramatic stuff like effects and interesting voices or even other people reading for different characters (as long as I stick to the text)?

Welcome!

Some people like to use character voices, some don't -- that's entirely up to you! For collaborative projects, please avoid sound effects etc. unless the book coordinator wants them. If you plan a solo project, though, you can add whatever you like as long as it is clearly and verifyably in the public domain. It is a giant headache for the cataloging team to try to make sure extra noise, music, and whatnot are PD so have mercy on us :) If you create them yourself, no problem. We *mostly* try to avoid sound effects because *mostly* we are trying to create audiobooks, not radioplays, but, y'know, who are we to squash someone's fun! If it makes you happy (and is in the public domain) go for it! :)

To echo in a different voice: if you sign up for a chapter in a book (Readers Wanted: Books), check with the coordinator before adding sound effects. (any collaborative venture)

Different voices -- Definitely!
Other people read along -- Definitely!! Get them to say their name someplace in the recording time, and include them in the opening credit.
On-the-spot-vocally-produced sound effects -- Definitely! but do check with the coordinator first even though those are patently Public Domain effects (oh, oh, and footsteps and creaky doors and water pouring, etc. on the spot with your own instant foley stuff -- gee ... the fun ahead -- again, check with the book coordinator because they may --

oooops, I never checked with hugh ever before going full tilt into Ulysses 15c experiment, oh my. But he had special rules set up for that, and ... that's my excuse

it looked like anything goes for that one.)
