Short Nonfiction Collection Vol. 001

This collection is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

http://librivox.org/librivox-short-nonfiction-collection-vol-001

This will be the first collection dedicated to recordings of short nonfiction works in English.

Please select and record any short essay or other nonfiction piece in the
public domain. Try to stick to works that run less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and
there is no need to "sign-up" before recording...as long as the work is clearly in the public domain, just start recording. Multiple versions are always welcome, so don't worry
whether someone else has recorded your selection already; we're happy
to hear your version too. :)

After 10 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

Recording Notes:

• At the BEGINNING Say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to
volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"

• If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."
• At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]"

• Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording or 10 seconds if longer than 30 minutes.

• Basic Recording Guide: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/NewbieGuideToRecording

Be sure to set your recording software to :44100Hz, 16-bit, and save your mp3 files at 128kpbs

[*]AFTER recording:
Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear distracting background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The free beta version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Note: Noisecleaning with other versions of Audacity is not recommended.

Please post the following with your file:

Bryan,

Thanks for recording something for this collection! Your catalog name is now in our database. I haven't listened to the entire recording, but your reading sounds good to me! Volume is a little low in the beginning but gets better as you go along. Something to be aware of for your next recording. :)

Thanks for the advice. I think it was mic placement. I adjusted it slightly after the first couple of pages. I take it the later placement was better.

Incidentally, I chose this reading because it sounded so apropos for today, even though it was written more than 100 years ago. I also live in the Napa Valley where London spent a good deal of time.

Oooh, what a nice new project! And you know, I've had "The Future of Astronomy" by Edward C. Pickering sitting on my desk for about a year now, because it was just too cool not to record (by some definition of the word "cool"...) So here it is!

http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~amhughes/futureofastronomy_pickering_amh.mp3

Please let me know when you pick it up, since I had to go over my quota to post it and can't keep it up for long!

Later mic placement was definitely better! Indeed this is a very appropriate reading for today. I quite agree - great choice!

Meredith,

I've downloaded your file so you can delete it from your server anytime. Thanks for contributing this recording to this collection! If science isn't "cool", what is?

Here is my recording of an essay by philosopher Immanuel Kant called "An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?":
http://www.mediafire.com/?32ih6ycg3wd

It's 17.4 MB and 18 minutes, 36 seconds long.

Here is the text:
http://philosophy.eserver.org/kant/what-is-enlightenment.txt

It is part of the website's "Canonical Texts Collection," which is only for works out of copyright. See the main page: http://philosophy.eserver.org/

Thanks! I've got lots more ideas for stuff to record here!

I remember how, in college, I got that part-time job as a circus clown, and how the children would laugh and laugh at me. I vowed, then and there, that I would get revenge.

Hello Jo,
I've recorded an essay by Jonathan Swift - it's the first time here that I've tried a recording in English instead of my native tongue - but I think it is intelligible enough...

Details:
Title: Hints towards an essay on conversation
Author: Jonathan Swift
Text can be found: http://www.bartleby.com/27/8.html
File can be downloaded: http://www.yousendit.com/download/ZUcxUXVtRStHa00wTVE9PQ
Size: 18.5 MB
Length: 19:47
My name: Anna Simon

Hope you'll like it for your collection. Let me know if it's not up to standard...

I took a listen, and I had no trouble understanding it. Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to tell you were not a native speaker if you hadn't said so. I don't think you've got anything to worry about. Great choice, Anna, and great reading! :)

Anna,

This is a great addition to this collection! Thank you.

I found your reading very clear and easy to understand. You should definitely consider doing more recording in English. :)

Leon,

As you can see this collection is shaping up nicely.

Thanks for the Kant essay. Keep 'em coming! We have a long way to go to catch up with the Short Fiction collections...

Jo,
May we upload our files directly to your folder under studioae.com? It's not specifically listed as one of the options, but that's where the files seem to be stored. I just didn't know if you had some reason for wanting people not to use FTP.
