Dear LibriVox:

I was just thrilled to download recordings of Plato's Euthyphro and Ion from LibriVox that I recorded Plato's Apology. I need to do some editing and break it into two tracks. I understand that I am to announce this on this solo forum and a meta-editor will help me. Thanks in advance!

Hi Fr. Zeile would you be able to post a link to the text that you read from? And also when the text was published? We need both these things to ascertain whether a text is in fact in the public domain. :)

I read from the Harvard Classics, which link is http://www.bartleby.com/2/1/1.html

Curiously, the Bartelby link does not credit Benjamin Jowett with the translation, although the printed Harvard Classic volume does. I listened to the first section (of four) to make sure the text is identical and it is.

The Apology is thought to have been written 399-395 B.C., during Plato's period of vindicating his teacher Socrates.

Dear Rowan:

I realize that you need the date of the English text, not when Plato wrote.('')

The Harvard Classics were published by Colliers 1904-1919.

I just edited your post briefly because the full stop at the end of the link was taking me to the main bartelby page and not the text.

I'll MC this for you, just give me a bit to set things up. :)

For your ID3 tags I'd suggest maybe something like:

Title: 01 - The Apology of Socrates pt 1
Artist: Plato
Album: The Apology of Socrates

Also you probably want to think about what level of proof listening you'd like too, details can be found here.

Ps its Rowen not Rowan

Dear Rowen:

Thank you for undertaking my edit! BTW, please accept my apology (no pun intended ('')) for misspelling Rowen.

I believe that a "detailed" level of proof-listening would be appropriate. I hope to learn how to improve on future projects.

Cordially,

Oh thats alright, my forum name tends to get misspelled a lot, the name is usually spelled with an a. :)

Once you've posted your sections I'll see about getting you a proof listener. :)

I'm just thinking, in the title field you might want to enter the first and last sentence of each section, just so that the proof listener knows where each sections starts and finishes. :)

Ok I've listened to part 1 heres what I've noted

1:50 - Stumble: They have hardly uttered a word of truth

4: 55 - read "and the cause when heard by default"
text "and the cause when heard went by default"

Missing "End of part 1" and 5 seconds of silence at the end

Section 2:

7:57: Read: 'and the evil do them harm'
Text: 'and the evil do them evil.'

10:18: Listen to it.

10:26: Recording goes 'echoy'?

11:00: Read: Anaxagoras and Clazomenian
Text: Anaxagoras the Clazomenian

11:10: "price of admission - to - that I do not believe in any god" is not in the Bartelby text...? Is this the text you read from?

Missing 'End of Part 2' and 5 seconds of silence

Also you don't need the 5 seconds of silence at the start, its only at the end that its needed :)

Dear Rowen:

Thank you for your listening through parts 1 & 2.

I originally recorded as one file, then broke it into 4 because of length. Should I have added the 5 seconds of silence by recording more silence, by transfering from the beginning, or just by running the file without the microphone on? (I am not sure if I am making myself clear here... :? )

The actual text I read from was the Harvard Classics edition which matched the Bartelby text (as I assumed you've noticed) up until (apparently) the section you mention, "price of admission...that I do not believe in any god." What to do about this? (Don't you hate sentce fagments?)

I am not all that hapy with the sound of my Marcus Aurelius recordings, either. Perhaps I need to invest in a new microphone. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Cordially Yours,

The silence at the end, what I tend to do is copy a piece of 'quiet' recording, ie a bit thats between sentences, and copy that till its 5s long (or 10s if its over 30 mins). Or just copy the 5 seconds of silence at the beginning and paste it at the end, though I'd say leave a second of silence at the beginning.

Or as you need to record 'End of part 1' just leave the microphone recording for another 5s and try to be quiet during that time. Running the file with the microphone off will make it sound a bit odd as that section won't have the same background noise as the other bits.

Does any of that make sense? :S

Sorry about the sentence fragment, I just didn't want to type out the whole sentence. As its just once sentence I think for the moment we're ok for now. I'll see what happens when I listen to the last 2 sections.

With regards to recording set up, whats your current set up? What type of microphone do you use? Is it a line in or a USB one? USB one's are much better. Also what programmes are you using to record/noise clean? :)

Dear Rowen:

Thanks for your post! Your suggestions make good sense.

My parenthetical remark about sentence fragments was not prompted by your quote but by my own "what to do?" which I judged to be fragmental (or is it fraggy?(':P')). Your quoted material with use of the elipse, or whatever we call the three dots, is perfectly sound, grammatically speaking (grammatically writing? whatever...). As you can see from the somewhat spotty spelling and poorly proofed posts, I could not presume anything more than self-criticism.('')

My recording setup consists of an Andrea nc-8 head-mounted microphone which is NOT a usb plug-in. I am using the Audacity software for editing.

I have been disappointed with attempts to add omitted stuff to recordings. You may have noticed the odd sound of "by Plato" in the title section. I suppose this would matter less if I rerecorded the whole phrase/title instead of just the added portion.

You might want to look at getting a USB microphone, if your currently using a line in, as the sound quality will be a lot better. You can get a pretty cheap USB one from Logitech, mine was about £15, so I think over there it'll be between $15-$20, although I"m not certain.

Also when using audacity, make sure your doing the noise cleaning in 1.3.3 and not in 1.2.6 (the noise cleaning affect in 1.2.6 is very bad). You can have both versions installed and 1.3.3 shows up as Audacity (Beta). What I tend to do is record in 1.2.6, because its more stable, and then save the file as a .wav and open it up in 1.3.3 and do the noise cleaning.

Theres more info in this topic here

And the wiki has some good info here

If I've omitted something in the text, I generally find its better to just re-record that sentence. The sound might still be a bit different, but its slightly less jarring than just inserting a word.
