A Thunderstorm At Night by Eric Mackay (1851 - 1898)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-thunderstorm-at-night-by-eric-mackay-2/
George Eric Mackay was an English minor poet, now remembered as the sponging half-brother of Marie Corelli, the best-selling novelist. As a poet he is described as "execrable", and reliant on Corelli's promotion of his works. His first works appeared in periodicals in the early 1860s; he achieved some reputation in his time for Letters of a Violinist (1886). It sold 35,000 copies; he repaid Corelli's efforts by implying he wrote her novels.(Summary by Wikipedia )
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
A Thunderstorm At Night by Eric Mackay, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
The lightning is the shorthand of the storm
That tells of chaos; and I read the same
As one may read the writing of a name,—
As one in Hell may see the sudden form
Of God's fore-finger pointed as in blame.
How weird the scene! The Dark is sulphur-warm
With hints of death; and in their vault enorme
The reeling stars coagulate in flame.
And now the torrents from their mountain-beds
Roar down uncheck'd; and serpents shaped of mist
Writhe up to Heaven with unforbidden heads;
And thunder-clouds, whose lightnings intertwist,
Rack all the sky, and tear it into shreds,
And shake the air like Titians that have kiss'd!
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Hi David,

I wonder if the word "Titians" in the last line is referring to Titian the Venetian painter (and a friend), or is maybe a typo for "Titans" - those mythological giants. I'm betting on the latter, but am open to advice.

Thanks,
Bruce.

I pronounced 'Titans.' That made sense to me. And to be honest, I did not even see what is probably a typo in the text.

Thanks, Kevin. I think I'll go with "Titans" also. But the concept of Titians combining their artistic talents is understandably compelling.

I searched for a pronunciation for Titian and what I found was "Tish-un".

Thank you Paula and Lee.

I agree that the poem is referring to Titans - the giants, either it was spelled like that back then or every source is wrong. :hmm:

Don't think this poet is clever enough to put the Titians into this, and Titans makes sense.

And now I'm officially back to LV! This is the first thing I've recorded since February of 2020 so my voice is awfully rusty but I hope it's passable:
