Myths and Legends Around the World - Collection 11, by Various

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/myths-and-legends-around-the-world-11/
This collection is dedicated to recordings of short mythical or legendary works which are in the Public Domain. The stories tell of legends, heroes, myths, and ancient lore from many different cultures. (Summary by Lynette Caulkins)
Please choose and record any short myth or legend that is a short story in the public domain. It may be from a stand-alone book or a single chapter from a book. For clarification of what it means for a work to be "in the public domain," see this section of the LibriVox Wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Copyright_and_Public_Domain. Try to stay with works that run less than 60 minutes. You may read up to 2 selections per volume in this collection. You may use 2 sections for one myth/legend if the story is too long for one section. Multiple versions of the same story are welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your topic already; we're happy to hear the version you found, too. :) Please note that in this collection we do not do reservations on sections, as is typically done with LibriVox group projects. If you wonder about the suitability or public domain status of a story you want to record, feel free to ask questions in the discussion before you do the work of a recording. If this collection fills before you are able to do that recording - No Worries! - the next collection will be open for you very soon. :)

After 12 sections are submitted and approved, we will catalog the collection and make it available to the public.

Here is a list of sources that still have chapters available: Potential Sources for Myths and Legends Around the World *Please note that you are absolutely welcome to use other public domain sources. (In fact, bonus points for finding a new source, particularly if it contains cultures not yet represented on the list!)

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

That will be a wonderful addition, Brianna! (I'm noting both yours and Olly's stories on the suggestions list, so folks know they're in progress)

Hi, Brianna -

Your recording is beautifully done, and the reading itself has zero issues.

However, one of your technical specs has slipped off the setting that LibriVox has to use. Your track comes up at 48,000 Hz for the Sampling Rate, causing Checker to fail it. So, this needs to be fixed.

If you are using Audacity, fixing the Sampling Rate is simple. (I’m only familiar with this software, so if you use a different recording platform, perhaps you can find a similar mechanism there.)

Open the file, and on the left side of the track, there will be a drop-down menu arrow at the right side of the track name. In that menu, open the “Rate” selection, and choose 44,100 Hz.

(Note that doing this will change the time length of the track a little bit.)

Now you can export the file to mp3 again and then upload the new mp3 to the project. Be sure to include the new time length of the file when you post about having uploaded your edited file.

Let me know if you need any help! :)

Hello! Thank you for contributing this fun story! :)

Great reading! There is one thing on the recording that you may want to edit - at 5:37.5, the volume of your recording suddenly drops significantly and becomes harder to hear through the end of the track. If you want to apply Amplify to that portion, something like 5 would do the trick to even your track out.
