The French Revolution: A History. Volume 2: The Constitution (version 2), by Thomas Carlyle (1795 - 1881)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/french-revolution-a-history-vol2-thomas-carlyle/

The second volume of this famous and idiosyncratic history covers events from October 1789, after Louis XVI has been 'persuaded' to leave Versailles and take up residence in Paris, through to August 1792. By the end of this time, Louis and his family have tried, unsuccessfully, to flee the country, France has been invaded by foreign powers, and anti-royalist French militia have brutally massacred a corps of Swiss Guards seeking to defend Louis and his family in their Paris residence. Louis is imprisoned, and it is clear to all that a three year effort to establish a constitutional monarchy have failed. (Summary by Peter Dann)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Some additional information on this proposal:

Sunrise2020 has kindly agreed to act as DPL for this project.

I am aware that there is already a Librivox recording of Volume 2 of Carlyle's history. This will be a second reading of this part of the work.

For the introductions of individual sections, I intend to use the format I adopted for my reading of the first volume of this work.
This is now catalogued at: https://librivox.org/the-french-revolution-vol1-ver2-thomas-carlyle/
The forum topic for the first volume is at: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=88141

Excellent!
I have just uploaded section 03: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/frenchrevolutionvol2_03_carlyle_128kb.mp3 (16:25)
Bit of a name salad, this section. Possibly not Carlyle's finest hour...

It's good to be back in the midst of the French Revolution!

PL of sections 1 and 2 is ok.

You're very tolerant! It ain't Conrad - but still, a lot of the action does get pretty interesting later on.

I have uploaded:
Section 09: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/frenchrevolutionvol2_09_carlyle_128kb.mp3 (4:36)
Section 10: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/frenchrevolutionvol2_10_carlyle_128kb.mp3 (13:50)

Carlyle's frank bemusement at some of these goings-on is pretty funny, I think.

Thank you!

Actually, there are some pretty hilarious (if brief) remarks on the progress of certain marriages near the end of section 12, too - doubly hilarious because Carlyle's marriage with his own wife was one of the most notoriously acrimonious in Victorian England. He knew a thing or two about vinegar.

I have uploaded:
Section 11: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/frenchrevolutionvol2_11_carlyle_128kb.mp3 (15:05)
Section 12: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/frenchrevolutionvol2_12_carlyle_128kb.mp3 (18:25)

For all Carlyle's derision, it is actually the grand festivity on THIS 14 July that the French celebrate today as their National Day, and not the fall of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July the previous year — although I didn't know that myself until a few weeks ago. In Australia we generally refer to 14 July as "Bastille Day" (if we refer to it as anything at all). But then, we are pretty ignorant of European affairs generally, as a rule...
