The Blue Review, Volume 1 Number 1, by Various

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalogue page https://librivox.org/the-blue-review-number-1-by-various/
The Blue Review was a short lived monthly journal published in London between May and July 1913. The successor to Rhythm, The Blue Review was edited by John Middleton Murry and Katherine Mansfield, but survived only three issues. In addition to poetry and short literary pieces, the review included reviews of theatre, music and the arts and of books recently published in English and French. The first issue of the journal includes the D. H. Lawrence short story, The Soiled Rose, which was later published as Shades of Spring. (Summary by Phil Benson)

Target completion date: 2021-07-31

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Annise and Newgatenovelist will MC/DPL

I am following the Wheels projects for the file naming, etc., but I'm not sure what genre this is - Wheels was 'anthologies' but I don't see that as an option. I've put literary fiction, but it's an arts magazine, really.

Also not sure about the author of the whole thing - I've put 'various' and I'll put the individual authors in the MW titles. There are editors though - Murry and Mansfield and I guess they could be authors of the whole thing?

Thanks! Yes, we can wait till later. But I forgot, silly me, that we did Blast! not long ago. The author was 'Various' and the individuals in the section titles as I've done here. The genre was 'short stories', though I'm not sure that works here because we also have poems and reviews.

Two short poems to get this going!

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bluereview1_01_various.mp3 - 1:15
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bluereview1_02_various.mp3 - 3:25

These are older recordings. They sound terribly echoey to me now that I've changed my recording set up, but the old setup is still there in case of corrections.

And two more short ones. I'll leave the Lawrence story until later as it is a long one!

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bluereview1_05_various.mp3 - 9:36

The flea hunt is fun! We should have more WH Davies poems in the catalogue.

Part 4 ready for PL! One of my favourite DH Lawrence stories.

At 34:35, there's a line, 'We'll let it stand at that', that I've given to Syson, but I think it might equally well go to the gamekeeper. If you think it needs changing, I have both versions, so it would be easy enough.

Sections 1 and 2 are PL OK! And don't worry about the sound being different - that's part of how your setup has evolved. If we waited until we had perfect setups several projects would never have been recorded.

Sections 3 and 5 are PL OK! I had a bit of trouble accessing the site, but I think things are back on track. Very much looking forward to the Lawrence!

Section 4 is PL OK. I think you can leave the line as it is, with Syson. He's doing more of the talking at this point than the reticent gamekeeper, and Lawrence sometimes marks off the keeper's speech with more 'local' or class touches than Syson, who's left those behind.

It's a smaller point, but if you keep it as Syson it also highlights the break with Hilda. If Syson is saying 'we' (Syson and the keeper) are the only ones who can write to each other, and two pages later Hilda use 'we' for her and the keeper (and the story draws attention to that), it's a subtle but effective way of showing there is no longer a 'we' that includes Hilda and Syson.

That makes sense, because of course that is what Syson is doing by saying they should write to each other, and the gamekeeper isn't convinced of the idea.

Not the most interesting article, for me. I'm assuming this is the author? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._L._George.

Hi Anne,

I have just put most of the authors into the metadata - I have only added the authors. Do I need to fill in the other boxes, or is that done automatically?

All but two showed up in the catalogue - Oliver Gogarty and W. Denis Brown, plus the last section has no author. Interesting that they were all quite young, mostly in their late twenties, and the editor, Murry, was only 24.
