I was in a taxi last week (unusual for me but I had to get my 11 year old granddaughter on a plane home as an unaccompanied minor and I thought it would be easier as I had to hang around with her until she actually boarded the plane ).
I noticed he had rechargeable earplugs - 2 pairs - and he was listening to the taxi radio with one ear and I assume music with the other so he was listening in a car but not using the speakers. :D

The car stereo part was not intentional, in fact. Actually, I asked my son if he could make me sound like Ian McKellen (as if!) and this was the result. But it does sound best in a car, which I guess makes sense in terms of target audiences.

This was the sample - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irJe30hF8JA - the Wolf Brother is a great trilogy that we listened to years ago - I think the audio version was given away free with the Guardian.
Ian McKellen is a great model to aim for, in the reading or in the editing!

Section 1 is spot PL OK.

That link is really interesting. I couldn't help but notice that it said that 'The average audiobook users are affluent men', but the 'affluent' wouldn't be surprising if a lot of the data were drawn from big publishers' usage stats where their listeners would automatically have to be affluent to be listeners. If anything, it opens up more questions about listeners whose habits aren't being tracked by Audible and the like!

For the record, I don't assume I'm a typical listener, as I don't have a car or smart speaker...

One note for section 3:

18.20, bottom p 467, omission
[Masters and mistresses have themselves to thank;-] they have behaved as though...

You might want to immerse yourself in Gaskell, or you might have read some of these and want a change of pace! If you're interested, there are some radio dramas of some of her shorter, darker stories on the BBC, including The Crooked Branch:

Part 3 corrected and uploaded. A bit of delay on this project as couple of the original recordings have been eaten by the Audacity gremlin (including the original for Part 3, so the correction is not perfect).

These were very interesting to listen to, having recorded both myself. Both work very well as abridged versions, which makes me wonder whether the originals were not longer than they needed to be. I'm not sure how BBC sounds works, but presumably they will put up more next week? Looking around the site, I also found Muriel Spark's A far cry from Kensington, which was fun!

Part 3 is spot PL OK. As for Audacity eating your work, I'm sorry. It's rough when that happens, especially if it's a longer section and/or took a lot of prep with a lot of difficult pronunciations.

The Gaskell dramas from the vault will be going up at weekly intervals (that's often, but not always, the case). The Poor Clare is up next, followed by Lois the Witch a week later (Sunday early evening BST), and the last one is The Grey Woman a week after that. The link I gave was on the 'Available now' tab, but there's another tab that lets you have a sneak peek - it's just to the right, 'Next on'. If you're all fired up for more Gaskell! BBC Sounds is not always the easiest site to navigate, but that's kind of a minor quibble when there's so much free stuff!

Part 4 ready for PL! The two Agnes Worrall's are not exactly parts 1 and 2. So I've added that little note at the end because Jewsbury's ending suggests only that there might be a continuation, not that it is coming up on the next track.

Section 4 is PL OK. The sympathy for Agnes seems to pick up where the sympathy for servants in the previous section left off!

Section 5, ready for PL!

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/jerrold_05_jewsbury.mp3 - https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/jerrold_05_jewsbury.mp3

The argument at the end that children bear the consequences of their parents' loveless marriages is a bit ironic, as Agnes's mother abandoned her because she loved her husband so much. But I guess GJ was really just against marriage, full stop!

Tell me about "the little note" I can't listen at the moment but it does sound like you are "improving" the author's work :hmm:

A couple of notes for section 5. This ended up being darker than I was expecting. Not that that's a bad thing, I just assumed Agnes might have a happier ending!

16.57, omission, p 252 mid-page or little below
“My dear, [my dear,”] cried the old man...

34.49, omission, p 258, bottom para
...the reflex of their own minds and opinions, [reproduced and exaggerated;] they get nothing fresh in...

It just says that the story will be continued in the next section. It was because at the end she says that she may continue it sometime, so the listener may not be expecting a continuation straight away. It's easy enough to delete if it is a problem.
