Source text (please read only from this text!):"The most striking feature in the present day, far more than that of railways even, is the utter chaos into which all previously received principles and opinions are reduced". So begins 'Today', the first in a series of six pieces of social commentary written by Geraldine Jewsbury for Jerrold's Shilling Magazine in 1846 and 1847. Jewsbury would go on to be a prolific novelist and contributor to The Athenaeum and Household Words. In these early pieces she advances the beginnings of a philosophy that runs through her later fiction. At the centre of the collection is the two-part story of Agnes Worrall, who is abandoned to the care of a succession of uncaring relatives and eventually married off to a man she does not love. In this and other pieces in the collection, Jewsbury is a sharp critic of the substitution of respectability for moral value, and of the attitudes of her middle class contemporaries to the management of their servants and the education of the 'the lower orders'. In a world that has seemingly lost its moral bearings, she insists on a philosophy of mutual care and the elevation of the working classes through genuine education. (Summary by Phil Benson)
