Thrift, by Samuel Smiles (1812 - 1904)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/thrift-by-samuel-smiles/
This book is intended as a sequel to "Self-Help," and "Character." It might, indeed, have appeared as an introduction to these volumes; for Thrift is the basis of Self-Help, and the foundation of much that is excellent in Character. The object of this book is to induce people to employ their means for worthy purposes, and not to waste them upon selfish indulgences. Many enemies have to be encountered in accomplishing this object. There are idleness, thoughtlessness, vanity, vice, intemperance. . . . Some of the advice is obsolete, such as discussion about military savings banks and penny banks, but the general principles still apply even today. (Summary from the Preface & TriciaG)

Hi Tricia,

may I take section 0 Preface & Fable?
And, to just to be sure, after the LibriVox intro as usual, this section should start with "Preface"? That is, you do not want the quotations by George Herbert and Robert Burns?

Thanks,
Jennifer

Ah, I didn't notice those two quotations. If you would, please include those as well.

You can still say "Preface and fable" for the intro (don't say "section zero" - that's just weird :P). At the end of the intro, "Thrift, by Samuel Smiles," read the two quotes without any title to them, stopping at Robert Burns'a name. Then "Preface" before the preface, and "A fable" before the fable.

Clear as mud?

Section 1 done:

https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/thrift_01_smiles_128kb.mp3

18:53

I ran it through the basic Audacity noise reduction to remove the hiss as much as possible. If there are additional steps you would like me to take, let me know.
Thank you

I think I got it. Easy enough to fix if I misunderstood, just let me know.
Section 0 ready at:

I'm learning to use a new DAW . . . quite an adventure!

Preface: PL OK! Yes, that's what I meant. 8-)

Section 1:

4:45 - longish pause
10:04 - "in consequence of the thorough tillage..." repeated at 10:15 (10:04-10:15 or so can be deleted)

Volume's a bit too low. If you do Compressor set at -16 threshold and ratio around 3:1, it'll give you room to amplify by about 4 dB to get you in the sweet spot.

There's still a fair amount of hiss/white noise in your recording. I'd like to hear the recording before you apply noise reduction. Maybe I can help you tweak the settings for your situation. :)
