A Doll's House, by Henrik Ibsen (1828 - 1906)

This project is now in our catalog at https://librivox.org/a-dolls-house-by-henrik-ibsen-2/
Published in 1879, this 3 act play was a bombshell, exposing the he tragic hypocrisy of Victorian middle class marriage. T he play is significant for the way it deals with the fate of a married woman, who at the time in Norway lacked reasonable opportunities for self-fulfillment in a male-dominated world. A wife was almost literally a bird in a cage for display by the husband. Note that this is a solo reading of the entire play by one person. We have an excellent dramatic reading of this play in our catalog also if that is more to your taste. (Summary by phil c)

Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Phil
I am a bit surprised at your use of the adjective "Victorian" for a play set in Norway. She was only Queen of the British Empire not the whole world, even if she might have thought she was
You don't mention the translator (Et dukkehjem). This is an English version I have not read before :hmm:

Ha! very true about the Queen. I think that Et dukkehjem is just the Norweigan for The Doll House or title of the play. But if you have any information about the translator I would be happy to get it.

Hi Phil! I have just listened to Act 1, and have only one optional edit to note, at 1:14:15 the text "Yes, and I must try and [...]" was read as "You and I must try and [...]". Otherwise, Act 1 can be marked PL OK!

Hey, cool of you to listen. I have the presumption that most people don't like plays read by one person since they are written to be staged by many people and so am hesitant to ask others to endure my attempt. I enjoy doing them it but they probably won't. Thanks. I'll get on that fix tonight. :D

There are some advantages in listening to a play by a single reader, like for example that the sound quality is the same throughout, where otherwise the difference in sound/volume/echo/background noise/etc could be distracting.
Also, I too tremendously enjoy reading aloud plays, so I know how you feel!

Act 2 is PL OK!

I will be back for Act 3 when it's ready!

Oh good, so I'm not the only one who likes doing that, whew! I just forgot to upload Act 3 so it is there now. What do you feel about this play. I find myself thinking about it at night in bed; Dora is such a strange emotional reach for my modern morality. She lives in a web of lies and deceits but then so do a lot of us I guess. Anyway, it is powerful.

Act 1 has been fixed. It would indeed have been completely out of character for him to read anything with his darling little songbird.

Act 3 is PL OK, and Act 1 is spot-checked PL OK! Ready for the catalogue!

I don't know how to feel about the play. It is powerful, in the way this drastic change in Nora leads her to abandon even her children.

It seems such a complete change of character and personality. Expectations will destroy us yet, eh? But I enjoyed reading it a lot. Think I will look at a few more Ibsen plays and maybe some Shaw. Thank you very much again for such quick listening.
