You're very kind, Susanne. To be honest, I think a good deal of that effect comes down to Ford Madox Ford's brilliant mimicry of the manner of a rambling narrator, a bit of an old duffer, sitting at a fireplace pontificating and waffling on. It's a style, alas, that probably suits me as a reader aloud (though I do truly think some of the pontifications are very good). While reading this alound, I've also been reading to myself the first volume of FMF's "Parade's End" tetralogy, which is called "Some do not..." I think it's excellent, but it's strange and bizarre too, and could be rather more challenging to read aloud than this is, I suspect.Sunrise2020 wrote: ↑March 25th, 2021, 9:33 am

I enjoyed these two chapters and the gently unfolding events. No agonizing choices in selecting a daughter to become a wife. Or perhaps it had been terrifying for Edward and he was firm about his choice. Read a chapter of "Parade's End" aloud and let me know how it goes.TheBanjo wrote: ↑March 26th, 2021, 4:48 pmYou're very kind, Susanne. Thank you again, Susanne! All up, it's a pretty terrifying view of the English upper class, and the very peculiar mix of constraints and freedoms under which they operated, that we get here.Sunrise2020 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 10:40 am

I'm definitely going to attempt "Some Do Not..." (first part of the Parade's End tetralogy) next, regardless of its difficulty, and I would certainly welcome your company on the journey, if you're up for it. I do feel I have to warn you that even after The Golden Arrow and this novel, it's a bit startling and strange, but as an example of a quite different kind of modernism from, say, Virginia Woolfe or Joyce, it's really very interesting, I think.

I'd be delighted to continue this journey with you. I didn't know FMF before and I'm curious about his other novels. We're breezing through this sad tale and I'm learning about life during a very different time. Somehow listening to a book is quite a different experience for me than reading one. As if I'm listening more carefully and don't skip over sentences I don't mind if the next one is a bit strange or more challenging. Let's do it!

Excellent! I, too, feel I'm learning about a very different time (and society) from my own. And I couldn't agree more about how different it is to be following a book aurally from a normal reading experience. I find I feel much closer to the text, and that's very satisfying.Sunrise2020 wrote: ↑March 28th, 2021, 9:38 am

I liked the opening of this chapter, when he writes about his meandering style....Telling the story to someone in a country cottage.TheBanjo wrote: ↑March 29th, 2021, 12:29 amExcellent! Yes! And here I am reading on my Kindle, or listening on my iPhone with my earbuds... but in my heart, I guess, I'm still in that country cottage. It's an image with a lot of powerful associations.Sunrise2020 wrote: ↑March 29th, 2021, 9:19 am

Tricia, this is to let you know that I have just updated the summary description of the novel in the MW. I understand you will need to update a separate database record at some point to reflect this change.
