"The Rover: A weekly magazine of tales, poetry and engravings, original and selected" was a magazine started in 1843 by Seba Smith and Lawrence Labree. The editors aimed at a high quality standard in their selection of short stories and poetry. Every half-year, the 26 weekly issues were also published under a bound compilation. This is the eighth issue, featuring 5 short stories, 2 poems and a short quote from the drama "The Fair Penitent" by Nicolas Rowe. (Summary by Sonia)

May I read section 6? A rather sad poem :(
I wonder if section 7 could be added to the end of 6 as it is so short.

yes I was pondering the same thing but in the end I thought it best to leave them as separate sections, since they are by different authors. But please include the reference to the stage play and that it's an excerpt to the title (like I did in the MW.)

Wait...do you want both or only Section 6 ?

If section 7 is to be separate perhaps it should have a different voice, so leave it open for now :)

thank you, Alan, a lovely poem, even though sad. Narrated with feeling :9: and PL ok.

@Jim: I thought I saw a post by you but now it's gone :hmm: did you delete it again by accident maybe ?

frustration about the text ? I actually enjoyed it a lot, even though it was predictable what the gruesome outcome would be with such a treatment by the man. :(

A huge section, but flawlessly narrated, and straight PL ok. Wow I didn't think it was such a long story.

And I had the feeling this was only the excerpt of a novel, so I made some inquiries online and I was right, it's the final part of Asmodeus by Bulwer-Lytton. The whole book can be found here, this is where the excerpt starts: https://archive.org/details/asmodeusatlarge00lyttgoog/page/n196/mode/2up.

I think the editors of the Rover should credit the writers for their stories  But back then that was probably not necessary. Still I am wondering now how many other stories are excerpts from famous writers. Maybe I should have searched for them all. I will probably make a note in the summary to credit Bulwer-Lytton at least.

Thank you Jim

I am not surprised that it was by someone like Bulwer-Lytton because it was so beautifully written. I was frustrated by my attempts to manipulate the tempo. I am glad that it seems to have been all right. Thanks, Sonia. :D
