Hey Larry,

Are you talking about Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card? (I think that's the right name.) If so, I've only read the first one, and it was so long ago I don't remember much of it, certainly not the name of the alien adversaries, or even what kind of creature they were.

I've got another chapter on the way. I'll try to get it to you soon.

Thanks for you help,

Daryl

Hi Amy,

Here's a newly updated summary. I think it adds some important details to the story.

"An Earthman On Venus" was first published as a serial under the title "The Radio Man" in 1924. It is the first book in a science fiction series imaginatively written in the vein of Edgar Rice Burroughs. The main character is Myles Cabot, an earthman who finds himself accidentally transported to the planet Venus. He is naked and unarmed in a world filled with man-eating plants and giant insects. He soon discovers the planet is ruled by enormous ant-men, who have subjugated the Cupians, a more human-like race of inhabitants, to use as their slaves. Myles is immediately captured and must learn to communicate with the Formians, his six-foot tall ant-like masters. But how can one hope to converse with creatures which seem to be completely deaf and dumb? While Myles is in their grasp, he meets and becomes enthralled with Lilla, a beautiful Cupian maiden who has been kidnaped from her own people and enslaved by the giant monsters. Though more human-like in appearance, she, too, seems totally without the power of hearing or speech. Using all his wits, Cabot must devise a way to escape from his captors in order to help Lilla and the Cupians end their long slavery to their Formian masters. Other books in the series include "The Radio Beasts" (1925) and "The Radio Planet" (1926). (Summary by Daryl Hanson)

I hope this will be suitable. Thank you for your help.

Forgot to update this one, but it is PL OK.

Yes, Orson Scott Card and his Ender's Series.
The enemies were called the Formics, for their ant-like appearance. He developed quite a detailed description of them and their society and dominance in the universe. But insect life forms are not uncommon in the classic SF genre. He just developed it to the greatest extent.

Spiders pop up fairly regularly. Tolkien has a great one in Lord of the Rings. Of course, a good Biblical reference for someone saved by hiding in a cave that was then covered by a large web. . . .

Hard to find something totally original. But, this is a good lively story. :)

Hey Larry,

I thought Ender sounded familiar. I didn't remember the name of the alien species, though. In regards to spiders, yes, Tolkien has a great one. Her name is Shelob or sometimes she's called Ungoliant, I believe. She's a real bad character, incredibly evil, if you know what I mean. And even before he wrote Lord of the Rings, he introduced the big spiders in Mirkwood forest who try to have a meal of the Dwarves in the Hobbit. Love Tolkien; he was an incredible storyteller.

I agree that it's very hard to come up with something original these days. I'm a writer myself, and in my book I have a pretty hairy spider, too. It's called a rith and it's something like twenty-five feet tall. But then again, I have a lot of exotic creatures thrown in there. A vivid imagination, I think.

I can't seem to place your reference to a Biblical personality who hides in a cave, which is then somehow covered by a spider. King David hides from Saul at Adullam, I know, but I don't remember anything there about a spider. Maybe that's in some kind of Apocryphal book, but I haven't read any of those. It almost sounds a little bit Twilight Zone-ish to me. You'll have to tell me where I can find that story.

Anyway, I should have another chapter for you soon. Until next time. Have a good day. :)

10 and 11 are PL OK

Oh, to answer your question about the spider and the cave. It is indeed David, but the story embellished with the spider who spins a web over the mouth of the cave, thereby convincing his pursuers that he could not be in there is not in the Bible, but is a story form the Jewish Midrash. I'm not sure where I first heard it, but sometime in my childhood. Here are two references I found. One does give a link to its source in the Midrash, but I don't read Hebrew. The other is an audio of a storyteller relating the tale. Actually quite entertaining.

It wasn't until I was in college that I read of the great battle with Shelob, one of the best spider stories of all time. Somehow I missed Charlotte's Web growing up, but she has quite a fan base, I guess.

Of course, I have my own true life spider stories.
