Life and Writings of Addison, by Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800 - 1859)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/life-and-writings-of-addison-by-thomas-macaulay/
Joseph Addison (1672-1719) was an English essayist, poet, playwright, and Whig politician. Today he is most famous for his contributions, with Richard Steele, to the "The Spectator" magazine. In this essay, Macaulay portrays the life and work of this quiet, compassionate man, who amidst the cut and thrust of bitter political and literary rivalries, was always a gentleman, loved by his friends and, in the person of the Spectator, by posterity, as well. (Summary by Pamela Nagami, M.D.)

No, DaveC.

That version is the original negative review of Lucy Aikin's "Life of Joseph Addison," published in 1843.

The one I want to use has the negative review scrubbed out. It's the one that was prefaced to this American edition of Addison's works and is different from the review version that is usually published in Macaulay's collected essays. Macaulay prepared this version also (cf. "The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay, Vol. II," p. 75 by Sir George Otto Trevelyan.)

Hi Erin and DaveC,

I have substituted a new link to the text, as the old link has illegible pages.

Hi Pam,

I'm seeing a file for Bismarck. Could you just double check that the files haven't been mixed up? Or if you really need me to PL Bismarck, I will!
