Bajazet, by Jean Racine (1639 - 1699), translated by Robert Bruce Boswell (1864 - 1933)
"The time to which this tragedy relates is much later than that of any other of Racine's historical plays. The capture of Babylon (or rather Bagdad) from the Persians by Sultan Amurath IV, on which the catastrophe of the plot depends, occurred only a year before the poet's birth, viz 1638."
(Summary by The Translator)
This project is complete. Audio files can be found on our catalog page at https://librivox.org/bajazet-by-jean-racine/

Another Racine as we move to Volume 2 of his collected works. A setting change - no longer Rome - but the Seraglio of Constantinople.

Gender neutral, of course.

Sonia will play the slave Zara, being your ever trusty DPL in her few spare moments.

We completed the last Racine in less than a month. Can we do that again?

Nor much in the way of stage directions, but I'd be glad to take them. I assume you want the introduction?
Now, I just have to figure out the pronunciations . . . .

And, congratulations on Bernice LV project 15,000!

(glad I got those last two lines in  )

Thank you.

Yes, please read the Introduction.

Remember my rule about pronouncing names: so long as you are consistent in your files, you are okay. Differences between the way characters pronounce names I take to be accents, affection, or affectation.

(Note that Sonia can probably set you straight if you really want to know how a name "should" be pronounced.)

Pronunciation of names is tricky in this case. As it is a French play should they be done the French way (for which Sonia can be our authority) but it is an English translation so maybe English names are appropriate. Then of course there are the original Turkish pronunciations, if anyone knows what they are :hmm:
I note that my character is Osman in this version but Osmin in the French text :D
