Hi Rapunzelina,
This is my third outing after a recent return to LibriVox, 'still stumbling here and there. I was quite surprised to find the following story has not been recorded for LibriVox before, this may be because it is close to copyright limitations in the UK. If you know of any just cause otherwise...?
So here goes:
Title:The Outsider by H P Lovecraft
https://www.fadedpage.com/books/20190945/html.php
Length of recording: 20:22.71
https://librivox.org/uploads/rapunzelina/ghohor050_outsider_lovecraft_as_128kb.mp3

I hope I got all that right, but I'm sure you will let me know if not,
cheers, Andy

Hi Dale! Thank you for bringing some more Dunsany in the collection :D

Hi Ryan! Welcome to the Ghost and Horror Collection! Thank you for your contribution! It's marked "Ready for PL" in the Magic Window.
Quite brave to read this scary story! ( I bet that's why it wasn't in the catalogue yet)
We'll use the Gutenberg text https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/21616
(Gutenberg is the preferred text source when the story can be found there. Second preferred option is scans of books showing the publication/copyright information, so that it can be verified that a work is in the public domain.)

Thank you for the revision, Rohan!

Hi Andy! Welcome back!
Copyright law in the USA has it that a work enters the public domain on the 1st of January 95 years after it was published. So now in 2021 we can use works that were published in 1925 and earlier. The Outsider was published in 1926. It will be OK to record for Librivox starting January 1st 2022. Keep your recording safe until then (it's PD for you in England). One more reason to come back to Librivox if you wander away again in the meantime

Well I'll be darned, I thought UK copyright was more stringent than the US. Thank you for the heads up, I new there was something odd about this one; I will take your advice and bank it 'till then.

Not more stringent. Just different. In UK the copyright law goes by author's death date plus 70 years.
So works published before 1925 by authors who died after 1951 are public domain in USA but under copyright in UK and Europe. And then works published after 1925 by authors who died before 1951, are copyrighted in USA but public domain in UK and Europe.
So in a nutshell, you, specifically, need to look for works published 1925 and earlier, by authors who died before 1951, when recording for Librivox :D

The Empty House by Algernon Blackwood

https://www.gutenberg.org/files/14471/14471-h/14471-h.htm#chapter1

Thank you for the opportunity. I liked the changing pace in this short story.
For some reason I pictured Richard Burton as he narrated The War Of The Worlds (Musical Version)
"And yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours, regarded this world with envious eyes. And slowly and surely drew their plans against us."
Thanks for your patience Grant! Had a busier week than planned.

Fantastic reading, really enjoyed this - my skin moving along with Shorthouse's at points!

A couple of PL notes
There's 2.5 seconds of silence at the start rather than the 0.5-1 sec
4.04 - I hear 'psychal research' for 'psychical research'

Amended as suggested - you have a keen ear!
Thank you - Grant

(A kind of pointed look at our current eating habits. From 51 Tales.)

Thanks
Dale
Thank you Dale - these little short stories are somehow so eerie... perhaps because they're so stripped back.
PL ok!

I was a bit surprised to see this one wasn't on the site already, as it's noted in several places as Morrow's best known story and there's already a few others by him.
Thank you Ryan! A very intense story!
A couple of PL notes.

Your recording is a little quiet - comes in at 82.3 on my checker. Please could you adjust to fall between the 87-91 db range - if you're using audacity this video has info on how to do this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_z607awyLw

At 00:14 your introduction is missing the second 'story and author name', which should appear after the 'recording by' section. So the full introduction should include:

"[Story title] by [Author name]. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [adding if you wish: location / date]"
Say:
"[Story title] by [Author name]."

Thanks again!

Hi! This is my first time uploading a piece, which was a little longer than I thought it would be; some notes however, you may hear me stutter in the beginning when i say "a-and are you Fairfax?" , that is intentional as part of dialogue. Additionally, at some point in the end, i read "in a metallic tone" instead of "in a metallic note", but it doesn't change the overall meaning of the sentence at all, so I hope that's okay.

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/10736/10736-h/10736-h.htm#IN_THE_FORESTS_OF_THE_NORTH

The piece was 41:12 (41 minutes and 12 seconds)

Since this is my first, i would like to go under the name "perwin" if possible

Thank you for your time! I hope everything was up to par; If you're wondering where I found the story, it was under one of the suggested horror story forums ~ I can't remember which one though.

Welcome here, Nuk1nat0r! And congrats on your first Librivox recording, and a long one at that!

Alix will listen, and she's such a diligent proof-listener, she'll even check your tech specs, through Checker. That's a nifty tool, also good for measuring volume, here's more info if you'd like to try it: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker

Indeed, London's adventure stories hold a lot of horror, and even when it's not horror caused by the supernatural, they fit nicely in this collection.

Just to clarify, it's 'perwin' with a lower-case p, right? Here's your Reader page in the catalogue: https://librivox.org/reader/15995
You can also access it from your name-link in the Magic Window. It lists projects you read for, and can also help you keep track of your sections in ongoing projects (under the "Reader section details" link).

Thank you for your contribution perwin! And congrats on your first recording - really great job for a first time, especially with a longer recording!

No PL notes at all - everything spot on. Well done!!

Hi! I'm completely new to this, and I was hoping I could find some direction on how to complete this reading, by doing chapters 17-20. I'd hope for someone to show me where I can find the chapters to read, and how to get started with recording. Thank You! :D

Hey, Samantha! Welcome to the Ghost and Horror Story Collection! Here you can record a story in the public domain of your own choice. Do you have a favourite ghost or horror story published before 1925? There are also some suggestions in the first post (of places where you can find stories).
