Civil Service by Walter Ben Hare (1880 - 1950).

Subtitled "An American Drama in Three Acts. A Play with a Punch." "A comedy drama of American life depicting the joys and sorrows, the heartaches and struggles and temptations of a small group of government employees working in a post office in a small city in the middle west. There is the stern inspector, the officious postmaster, the busybody mail clerk, the ambitious young clerk..., the kind hearted old man who carries the rural route, the raw recruit and the noble hearted, plucky little stamp clerk, who bravely stifles her own feelings and lives for the advancement of her friends."
(The Author)
  • This project is complete. Audio files can be found on our catalog page at https://librivox.org/civil-service-by-walter-ben-hare/

We are running another play of his - Sunshine - and since it is all full up, here is another. I could not resist when I saw "The Plucky Little Stamp Clerk" in the cast list.

    Gender neutral casting, of course.

DPL will be provided by A Lady of Importance - aka benderca - who everyone must always listen to becuz she is, well, important.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/civilserviceamer00hare/page/n1/mode/2up
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This is not well set up... Obviously "busybody mail clerk" should be a female role.

But I'm happy to read "plucky little stamp clerk" :D

Thank you. But this is cast gender neutral so busybody - or the plucky mail clerk - could be either sex....

Thanks, Todd

The Inspector please, Todd.

Why do I feel as though this "plucky little stamp clerk" is eyeing me with a view to applying a strategic Kendo blow?

Well, okay, just so long as there is learning and instruction in it.

Cheers,
Chris

You can't scare me, Annie ... I drove a charter bus in Sydney for the Welsh International Rugby supporters!

Nothing breaks up a fight in the back seats faster than stopping the bus, advancing on the combatants with blood in your eye, and then halting and commencing to sing "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau".

The boyos stopped going the knuckle on one another, and to a man stood up and joined in. Automatically dividing up the parts into four-part harmony.

Gotta love the Cymry.

Cheers,
Chris

LMAO! That would have been a sight! But I find that a 5' girl who can throw a grown man (the bigger the better) across a room tends to terrify some people...

Now children, behave! This is an audio performance. You can throw your voice all you want but combat visuals just do not communicate to our beloved audience.

Thank you all, Todd
