I absolutely was assuming they were saying "horizons" in an old-timey british-spelling sort of way. It makes sense, knowing the latin root of 'prayer', but I wasn't familiar with orison as an english word. Very cool.
yes LV is good for our culture

Thanks, all PL ok now

Here is Section 6--a sweet one, despite the war setting.

interesting story...so did I get this right ? The women first danced with the enemy at a ball, then the men took them prisoners in the night while they slept ? A bit unfair in my opinion :? But yes, in war everything is allowed I guess.

Totally PL ok again, Jim, thanks !

Section 1 is ready for PL:

No, not a happy ending.
But perhaps a backstory to this painting: https://www.wikiart.org/en/diego-velazquez/a-young-lady ??
Kate Follis
I love to read, AND my employer matches my volunteer hours with a donation to the Internet Archive, flagged to benefit Librivox.org. How cool is that?

wow this is a powerful opener to this collection  and yes the lady in the painting looks extremely sad :( She was a bit naive to fall for that guy though. But well, his behaviour was exceedingly despicable  A great story however and wonderfully narrated, with much feeling and emphasis. I really loved to listen to it. :9:

Thank you, Kate, this is PL ok.

One section left before this can get catalogued 8-)

Announcement: as I haven't heard back from the reader for over two months now, Section 4 is again up for grabs. It's the last section of the project, so maybe we can still get it on our March challenge list :9: though that is probably stretching it a bit.

Back to readers wanted...

hello and welcome to our forum :) so cool that you chose this project for your first official section. The stories are all quite lovely in this magazine and I adore listening to all the readers.

I see you already passed the minute test, so you are ready to roll. Since it is your first section, please read carefully through the very first post, where you can find the details on how to read the intro/outro, the title and how to name the file correctly. If there are any more questions, don't hesitate to ask :)

Be aware too that this story is not really short, I guess it will be about half an hour to 40 minutes end result, and the editing phase can often take up to 3 or 4 times as long. So if you prefer starting with a short poem, I could fully understand this ;)

But meanwhile, the section is yours, reserved for 2 months. Here is your brandnew personal reader page, where you will find all the projects listed in which you participate: https://librivox.org/reader/16017 If you wish your reader name to be different from your forum user name, please let me know and I can still change it. Some people prefer to go by their real name, it's up to you.

So all is set, you can record as soon as you want :)

Have fun with the Widow's Grave

And we move back over to Readers Found. :9:

Section 4 done:
https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/rover0106_4_various_128kb.mp3

31:29

I ran it through the basic Audacity noise reduction to remove the hiss as much as possible. If there are additional steps you would like me to take, let me know.
Thank you

 that - was - fast ! Thank you so much for the quick turn-around, especially since it was the last section we were waiting for. :9: There is still hope that it can get on our March Challenge finishing list 8-) well...depending how fast you will be with your edits ;)

The reading is very smooth and nicely articulated, so it's easy to understand and follow along. I really like your voice, which in this case even is fitting excellently with the narrator being a sexton. A very agreeable narration and already I hope you liked the recording process and I'll hear you in plenty more projects. :D

There are a few notes to correct though. Since you are a new volunteer, I can assure you right away: you do not have to re-record the entire text ! In fact this is not at all encouraged on the forum as it creates way too much extra work for the reader and for the DPLer, who has to relisten to it all again and the risks of other errors in the new recording are high. Rather, "Spot Editing" is the thing to do. Saves much time, especially in long texts like these. If you need any advice on how to best spot edit, please let me know.

So here is what needs doing:

> the volume is below our accepted limits (between 86 and 92 dB) yours is only reaching up to 84. You need to amplify by at least +2 to get to the absolute minimum, but even better +5 to get to about the optimal average of 89 dB. I noticed especially the last few minutes were really very low in volume and definitely need amplifying.
You can download the Checker programme, which will tell you the decibels of your finished mp3 file. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker
The background noise, by the way, was not disturbing to me, so your basic noisecleaning in Audacity was enough.

> at 0:29: (p. 91) could you please also add "Introduction" before you start the text ? We read the text as it's written by the author, so the subtitles should be included as well

> at 3:35: (p. 92) "and hear the deep and sombre tones of the old turret bell" – you say "steep" which is not really fitting in the context

> at 3:58: (p. 92) "the awful stillness of death" – I think I hear "awareful" :hmm:

> from 4:17 to 4:19: (p. 92) between "that shade the avenue" and "from the crevices" – could you shorten the pause here a bit ? Anything over 2 seconds feels really long for a listener. I would suggest staying around 1 to 1.5 seconds maximum, even between paragraphs, that is usually fully enough

> from 4:43 to 4:46: (p. 92) between "the approach of spring" and "it is during my rambles" – same here, the pause is over 3 seconds long, I would cut it significantly to under 2

> at 6:46: (p. 92) "when Mrs Walterson first arrived" – you say "Miss" but she was clearly married and a widow

> at the end: we leave a standard of 5 seconds of silence, you have nearly 8 seconds here, please cut 3 seconds from them

then simply reupload with the exact same file name, and the old file will be replaced by the new one.

Great first submission  Loved it !

all right, the reader did not pick up my PM and seems to be absent these days, but since the errors were quite easy to correct and otherwise the story was well narrated and it would take more time to have another reader re-record the entire thing...and so as not to hold up the project any longer, I made an exception for once and corrected them myself. :?

Jim....could I trouble you once more to Spot PL this section please ? :help: Then we can finish the cataloguing.

here is what I did:

> volume and noise - amplified the volume by 2 dB to get into our desired limits. Also made some overall noisecleaning

> at 0:29: (p. 91) please also add "Introduction" before you start the text - I couldn't find a suitable word to insert there, so let's leave it at that for once :|

> at 3:45: (p. 92) "and hear the deep and sombre tones of the old turret bell" - it was easy to remove the 's' from "steep" so now it sounds like "deep"

> at 3:58: (p. 92) "the awful stillness of death" – inserted an "aw" sound from "calm" a bit earlier on and I'm pretty happy with that outcome 8-)

> at 4:17: (p. 92) between "that shade the avenue" and "from the crevices" – shortened the pause

> at 4:41: (p. 92) between "the approach of spring" and "it is during my rambles" – shortened the pause

> at 6:42: (p. 92) "when Mrs Walterson first arrived" – managed to copy/paste a "Mrs" from further down, the transition sounds flawless to me

> at the end: standard of 5 seconds of silence - cut 3 seconds of silence

All is PL OK (and masterfully manipulated I might add), except for the intro silence, which is too short. Jim

thank you, Jim....yes about the intro silence, I didn't change that, I am not too picky about a milisecond ;) There was a bit of a breathing space, so I let it slip.

So that means this project can get archived :9: A big thank you to our small group of readers for this issue: Kate, Jim, Cassiopeia and borchata  Hope to hear you in any of the next issues as well.

Will lauching cataloguing now and post back once it's done.
