The Wonderful Adventures of Nils by Selma Lagerlof (1858 - 1940). Translated by Velma Swanston Howard (1868 - 1937)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-wonderful-adventures-of-nils-by-selma-lagerloef-2/
Nils Holgersson is a boy who would rather cause trouble than be responsible. One day as he is skipping out on going to church he captures an elf. His treatment of this small creature provokes it to transform him into an elf as well. Along with his greatly reduced size this also gives him the ability to talk with animals.
Following this mishap Nils joins one of his family’s geese as it accompanies a flock of its wild brethren on their migration. During his travels over the many historical areas of Sweden Nils has many adventures that help him to become a better person. He also learns that if he can prove he has changed for the better he may be able to regain his normal size.

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Looks good! I'll set this up for you. :)

We'll need a different summary/intro at cataloging time, since Wikipedia is not Public Domain. You can either write one yourself (using sources like Wikipedia as a guide) or maybe your DPL will help.

P.S. Does it matter to you that this will be Version 2 of this book? :)

I'm ok with it being version 2. This was my first favorite book as a kid so I'll enjoy recording it

OK, great!

As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here:
Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first three chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest.

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

Here is the link fir chapter 1. Length 39.45

https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/_wonderfuladventuresofnils_01_lagerlof_128kb.mp3

This is by far my longest recording to date. I also discovered that with longer files Audacity is very glitchy on a chromebook, it freezes and loses files. Based on this and on the length of the entire book I may have underestimated how long it will take me to finish the project. But even if I don't get it done by the end of June I will get it done eventually.

Since these chapters are rather long and unwieldy i would like to use a different approach for the remaining sections. I think they would be easier to record, edit, and proof listen if I split the chapters into their parts. For example, Section 2 would become "AKKA FROM KEBNEKAISE, part 1, EVENING", section 3 would be "AKKA FROM KEBNEKAISE, part 2 NIGHT" and so on.

Is this approach acceptable? if it is I will update the magic window accordingly.

Yes, perfectly acceptable. :)

In the audio, then, say "Chapter [number] part [number]" in the intro and at the end. (These are for sight impaired or for those who can't look at their player to know if they're listening in order.)

Regarding DPL: Since none has volunteered yet, you or I can advertise for one over in Listeners & Editors Wanted. Give me time to wake up.
