Virgin Soil Volume 2 by Ivan Turgenev (1818 - 1883). Translated by Constance Garnett (1861 - 1946)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/virgin-soil-vol2-ivan-turgenev/
The second volume of Turgenev's last novel sees social change bubbling up into conflict with the established order and interacting with the fates of the characters, testing their resolve and motivations to the limit. The publication being read is divided into two volumes; the first one includes Chapters 1-20, approximately half the book, and is catalogued separately. This recording is Volume 2, including chapters 21-38.
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/virginsoil02turguoft/page/n5/mode/2up
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Volume 1 (Ch 1-20) of this novel is almost complete.
This project is a direct continuation to the second half (Ch 21-38) of it.
Erin (Newgatenovelist) has kindly agreed to PL.

The readings for chapters 23 and 24 are PL OK (though keep an eye on the opening silence, which is getting shorter).

The file names will need to be changed at some point. The two most recent files are numbered sequentially according to their place in the novel (chapters 23 and 24), rather than their position within volume 2 (sections 3 and 4).

I was thinking that it might help listeners work out the concordance of where they were up to if we used the actual book chapter numbers as the "titles" - which corresponds to the headings in the printed text. What do you think?

The filenames should have the section numbers in them. Frequently they do not correspond to the chapter numbers. Listeners will only see the title information, not the filename, on their player display (ID3 tag).

Thanks Dave.
I'm not sure now what needs to be shown.
Could you give an example of how it would look? Should the title field be something like "Sect 1 (Chapter 21)"?
Many thanks

The title field of the MW is fine as you currently have it (Chapter #). The filenames though should contain the section #, not the Chapter #. E.g. section 3 would have "Chapter 23" in the title field (as you currently have it) but in the Listen URL field there would be: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/virginsoilvolume2_03_turgenev_128kb.mp3

Oh I understand now what the problem is.
So do I now just need to reupload Sects 03 and 04 with the correct filenames?

Yes. The files with 23 and 24 in their filenames will be deleted after the project is completed.
