The Brain and the Voice in Speech and Song by F. W. Mott ( - 0).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/brain-and-voice-in-speech-and-song-by-frederick-walker-mott/

From the Preface (to be edited later): "The contents of this little book formed the subject of three lectures delivered at the Royal Institution "On the Mechanism of the Human Voice" and three London University lectures at King's College on "The Brain in relation to Speech and Song." I have endeavoured to place this subject before my readers in as simple language as scientific accuracy and requirements permit. Where I have been obliged to use technical anatomical and physiological terms I have either explained their meaning in the text, aided by diagrams and figures, or I have given in brackets the English equivalents of the terms used.
I trust my attempt to give a sketch of the mechanism of the human voice, and how it is produced in speech and song, may prove of interest to the general public, and I even hope that teachers of voice production may find some of the pages dealing with the brain mechanism not unworthy of their attention." ( )
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/13111
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This project is now set up in the database. Since this will be your first project as soloist/book coordinator(BC), you will need to set up a password for access to the workflow system so you can enter the information into the section compiler which then appears in the "Magic Window" in the top post. Here are some links to detailed instructions for logging into the system and setting a password the first time, as well as for entering and editing information in the section compiler.

First Time Logging in to the Workflow

Instructions for BCs and DPLs

A version of the above is also in the LibriVox wiki in case you can't access Google Docs for some reason.

BCs - How to Update the Magic Window

Please also note I have shortened the suggested filenames and updated the text link to the main PG page for this book .

If you have any questions, let me know. I'll leave this thread here in the Launch Pad for a day or so longer before I move it to the Going Solo forum, to see if a DPL (Dedicated Prooflistener) volunteers. Looking forward to working with you.

Hi Jo, I filled out the MW and uploaded one section, just to test. (I wasn't sure if I should be uploading sections before we have a DPL.) I changed the wording from "chapter" to "section" because it doesn't have chapters. I didn't need all the sections and will probably end up combining sections a bit more.

Let me know if I need to change anything?

Super excited for my first solo

Go ahead and upload. It isn't necessary to wait until we have a DPL. :)

The rest looks ok to me. Since this is your solo, you can divide up the sections however they work best for you. :) I'll delete the unused sections for you.

Hi Marya,

You've done a great job with chapter 4! I only have a few PL notes for you to consider.

The volume is within the acceptable range, but you could consider amplifying by 2db which would bring this up to the target 89 db.

4:56, 7:53, 8:31, 12:03, 17:40 Helmholtz - you say Heimholtz (with a long i)
it should be helm like the helm of a boat - https://www.dictionary.com/browse/helmholtz?s=t
9:05 consider cutting "such as I show you on the screen"
11:05 the octave c' - consider reading as the octave beginning at middle c? (I think? - this nomenclature is really confusing!)
16:32 consider including the text you left out here and including the tables? (if you need advice on how to read the tables, I can help)

Thanks Jo! Thanks so much for taking the time to correct the vocal ranges.

Section #3
https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/brainandvoice_03_mott_128kb.mp3 17:15

Corrections made:
8:08 - 9:10 - re read "vocal ranges"
12:42 - figure 11 caption removed

Marya

------------------------
In section three, I need to refresh my memory with regard to the figure. However, for the table of ranges, if you include them, I think you need to clarify what octave these are in. I tried to look this notation up, but it appears that both the modern range and notation is a little different.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_type#Soprano

Anyway you would need to read the table above like this: (I think I have this right...)

Bass voice is from the second D below middle c to f above middle c 75- 354 vibrations per sec.
Tenor voice is from one octave below middle c to one octave above middle c 133- 562 vibrations per sec
Contralto voice is from the e below middle c to the second g above middle c 167-795 vibrations per sec
Soprano voice is from the b below middle c to the f above high c 239-1417 vibrations per sec

The complete compass of the human voice therefore ranges from about the second D below middle C (75) to the f above high C (1417) vibrations per second, but the quality of the same notes varies in different individuals.

No problem. I've been busy and haven't gotten to PLing the next chapter yet, but I will hopefully have time this coming week! :)

13:03 The tactile-motor kinæsthetic sense occupies the whole of the post-central convolution; the centre for hearing (and in the left hemisphere memory of words) - part in bold is missing

Otherwise - Well Done!
