The Home-Maker by Dorothy Canfield (1879 - 1958).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-home-maker-by-dorothy-canfield-fisher/
The Knapp family seems as though they ought to be happy, yet hidden frustrations are tearing them apart under the surface. As the family breadwinner, Lester Knapp drags himself reluctantly to his job each day, miserable in the harsh world of commerce and business, longing for a quiet life at home with his books. Meanwhile, Evangeline Knapp is admired as an excellent housewife, yet the limited challenges of that life are driving her to perfectionism and boredom. The Knapp children are affected by their parents' unhappiness, the youngest child acting out in frequent tantrums, and the two older children tense and nervous. When an accident puts Lester in a wheelchair and sends Evangeline out to work, their family and friends see it only as a tragedy. Yet Lester discovers his true calling at home, developing his own relaxed style of housekeeping, while discerning the individual needs and personalities of the children. And Evangeline discovers her true calling in the business world, demonstrating both creativity and organizational skills, thriving on the daily challenge and mental stimulation. Before long, the entire family realizes that they are all blossoming into a new happiness. But will this unconventional arrangement of gender roles be allowed to continue? Or will circumstances force the Knapps to return to the lives that made them miserable? ( Maria Kasper)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Yep, still game!
I seem to have fallen into the habit of sticking almost solely to non-fiction projects, so I've challenged myself to start the new year by trying something different -- recording a novel for a change. I read this one from the library about a year ago, and found it fascinating. It's a slice of 1920's society, yet some of the questions it raises are still relevant today, in a much different social setting. Anyway, it came to mind when I was looking for a novel to record. (Also, it's reasonably short, so if I should discover that recording fiction isn't my thing, I'm not going to be stuck in a thousand-page epic!)

Anyway, thanks for MC'ing, Tricia!

Chapter 1 is uploaded - (length 22:54)
https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/homemaker_01_canfield_128kb.mp3

Maybe having a section ready for listening will help us attract a DPL.

Here's Chapter 2 - (length 39:54)
https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/homemaker_02_canfield_128kb.mp3

Just from these first two chapters, I'm finding that recording fiction is taking me longer than my usual non-fiction stuff, because in non-fiction I don't have to keep trying to get the right tones and inflections in conversational passages. But I think I'm beginning to get the hang of it. Now that we're going into the slow time of year at work, I hope to really get busy with this project. Hoping to turn out a chapter a week, once I get going. (Bearing in mind the 'best-laid plans of mice...' etc etc.)

Fiction is definitively more difficult for me. Sometimes I just don't have the needed energy. When I'm feeling well, though, I love the story telling.

Goodness! What a good reading! I listened and got seriously unnerved by the quiet frenzy of the poor mother.
