Can You Forgive Her? by Anthony Trollope.
"Can You Forgive Her?" is the first in a series of six Trollope novels dealing broadly with 19th Century English political scene. It introduces the reader to Plantagenet and Glencora Palliser, as they court, marry, and as Plantagenet sets out on his political career, which is carried on in the foreground or background throughout the series. Each novel has a focus on other particular characters, as well. In this one, it is the dilemma of Alice Vavasor, who is a young woman choosing between two suitors: one who has all the best qualities, but who prefers a retiring private life, and another, whose qualities are doubtful, but who is ambitious for public office. There is also a comic subplot involving a widowed aunt, who also must choose between two suitors: Mr. Cheeseacre, a dull but stable farmer, and Capt. Bellfield, a charming but somewhat erratic retired military man.

Public Domain throughout the world (author died in 1882.)
  1. How to claim a part:
To find a section to record, simply look at the sections in the "Magic Window" below. All the ones without names beside them are available. Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Be sure to check the detailed instructions below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: January 31, 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/19500 (please do not use any other version.)
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!

Ah, I owe ol'Ant one from a conversation elsewhere ... I left this overnight in case a huge fan wanted to MC, but I'll grab it now. (Am happy to relinquish if aforementioned fan wants!)

Off to set things up ...

Hi Cori & Caet: I asked Caet to meta this in a pm, but Cori, you got here first! I am delighted to have either of you - why don't you just get in touch with one another and hammer out an agreement?

Oh, no problemo! Caet just needs to change the MC name in the database and one initial letter in the Project Title -- I think everything else can stay the same, now you've got FTP software and can shuffle the files about yourself.

I'm in touch with the good people who run http://www.anthonytrollope.com/ - It's a great site, well worth a look... And they might be able to help us generate a lot of interest!

David, thank you. I logged on to the Trollope site and E-Mailed them about starting Can You Forgive Her? If it fits in with their mission (and I don't know why not) maybe they will post it as news on their site. The E-mail invites them to sign up and contribute.

I think this sounds great too! Although I have claimed a lot of this book there is a lot left, and also, there are 5 MORE BOOKS IN THE SERIES AFTER THIS ONE. I probably will not claim so many chapters in the subsequent books !

I know I have been very greedy here, but excuse myself based on the fact that kmerline and I have planned this collaboration for some time. Actually, it was first to be a solo project. But I decided that by the end of it, if it EVER got done, that I'd be tired of Trollope forever, and I didn't want that. PLUS, too much solo work misses out on all of the wonderful community activity on L.V.

My other excuse is that if we get very low or slow or nil response then I will also chug slowly along by myself and get it all done. In the top notch Trollope books the English is so delightful. I also love how he can be very pointed in his commentary without beating the reader over the head and without being too very nasty. This is where I sometimes lose my interest in Dickens' work. So I guess the real point is that this is a labor of love for me.
Thank You :!:

LOL, I can do this, sure, now that Cori has done all the boring bits! And would you be so kind as to give me a couple of parts?

As for server space...do you have your own, or should I find some? (I forget how we are doing this for Henry Esmond.)

I think that's all taken care of in the first post, Caet, David volunteered space, and I popped a folder & sub-folder in place.

Hi there, I've just joined LibriVox and it's great to see a post about www.anthonytrollope.com - I run the site for The Trollope Society, it will be lauching this Sunday 13th May (150th Anniversary of Barchester Towers). I'd be delighted to put details of the Can You Forgive Her project on the site, and perhaps we could include an item on it in one of the Society's mailings. We have reading groups up and down the country, so hopefully we'll get some interest.

All the best
