[POETRY] The Secret Key, And Other Verses, by George Essex Evans (1863-1909).

All files may be found in our catalog https://librivox.org/the-secret-key-and-other-verses-by-george-essex-evans/
Born in London of Welsh parents, George Essex Evans was raised and educated by his mother Mary Ann (née Owen) in Pembrokeshire after she was widowed when George was only a few months old. Emigrating to Queensland, Australia with his siblings at age 17 with the intention of farming, Evans however was badly injured in a horse-riding accident, when he was thrown against a tree, and was unable to do any physical work.

Evans was described as a reserved man, and at times rather moody and impulsive. However, he was also described as a kind person and a loyal friend. He had a strong sense of honour and self-respect, traits which made him a model husband and father.

Evans was described as having a tremendous memory, particularly for poetic verse, of which he was able to recite a prodigious amount. Few of his contemporaries were able to match his breadth of knowledge of English, American and Australian poetry.

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/secretkeyotherve00evaniala/page/n7/mode/2up
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Sure Chris, that sounds like fun.

One side note, I lived in England for a couple of years a long time ago, and a portion of that time was in the East End of London where the Cockneys live. I was reading something on line about the Australian 'accent' and always noted that there seemed to be a bit of Cockney in it, and what I read said Yes, I did hear that because in the early days many of the people who emigrated to Australia were from Southeast England and many were Cockneys. Interesting.

Also, I often put "accent" in quotation marks because when I was living in England I was the one with the accent, not them. I knew a young lady (married) when I was there that told me that it seemed so strange hearing my voice come out of my face because I looked just like an old boyfriend of hers in Peterboro. Small world.

Wayne

P.S. Should I try to do it in my poor Aussie, or just straight in my American accent?

Chris,

I first read it without the 'accent' and the more I thought about it, as the Australian 'accent' is really the newest one I have tried and am working on, I thought I probably couldn't keep it consistent through such a long reading, so American is what you get. But like you said, with just a couple of words that may sound a little strange or out of place to an American ear if they listen closely, this could also be the story of our country.

Hope you like it.
