A Warning by Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850 - 1919).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-warning-by-ella-wheeler-wilcox/
Around the age of 8, Wilcox turned to writing poetry as an outlet. When she was 13 years old, her first poem was published. After losing her subscription to The New York Mercury, and being unable to afford to resubscribe, Wilcox thought that if she could get a piece of literature published, she would at least receive a copy of the paper wherein her piece was printed. The piece that she submitted is lost, and Wilcox later admitted that she could not recall even the topic of the poem. Wilcox became known as a poet in her own state by the time she graduated from high school.

Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.

Set your recording software to:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording. If this is your first recording, you'll also find this Newbie Guide to Recording useful.
Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
A Warning by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal URL.]
Then read the poem:
There was a flame, oh! such a tiny flame—
One fleeting hour had spanned its birth and death,
But for a silly child with playful breath
Who fanned it into fury. It became
A mighty conflagration. Ah, the cost!
House, home, and thoughtless child alike were lost.

Lady beware. Fan not the harmless glow
Of admiration into ardent love,
Lean not with red curled smiling lips above
The flickering spark of sinless flame, and blow,
Lest in the sudden waking of desire
Thou, like the child, shalt perish in the fire.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.
Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:
File name - all in lowercase: warning_wilcox_your initials in lowercase_128kb.mp3
(e.g. warning_wilcox_klh_128kb.mp3 )

ID3 tags (Version 2.30): ID Tags are completed during Cataloging

*Readers, please check back in a day or so for any feedback regarding your reading.

*Best to copy the filename provided above into the LV Uploader, inserting your initials of course.

Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
  • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader

Hello!

Here is the link to my recording: https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/warning_wilcox_sml_128kb.mp3
(file duration: 00:53)
My name, as I would like it credited on the catalog page, is Sebastian LaVine.

Also, I think there was a small typo when you wrote the wanted file name format:

File name - all in lowercase: warning_wilcox_your initials in lowercase_128kb.mp3
(e.g. warning_wilcoxh_klh_128kb.mp3 )

There seems to be an excess 'h' in the example you give with your own initials.

I hope that you like my recording!

Welcome to LibriVox Sebastian :D good first reading.
There are a couple of comments,
- on looking at your file specs, there is a high DC offset of +230, (I am not sure if it makes a difference or not) but best to get it lower, this si done in Audacity Effect/Normalize.
you can check your own file specs using our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker You will find the volume as well as all the other tech specs.
- a quality comment - you have a couple of 'plosives - breath noises hitting the mic, those are visible in the spikes in the waveform.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, aradlaw!
I have re-uploaded the recording, which has been normalized. There are spikes in the waveform every now and then, but I don't think they are 'plosives, but just where I start a phrase, or speak slightly louder. If these too should be corrected, I would be more than happy to do so. I appreciate you bearing with me, as this is my first submission :)
