In Darkest Africa by Charles Harold Herford (1853 - 1931).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/in-darkest-africa-by-charles-harold-herford/
WARNING - Cute kitty-cat poem!
Oliver Herford was an English writer, artist, and illustrator. His cartoons and humorous verse appeared in journals such as Life, Woman's Home Companion, Century Magazine, Harper's Weekly, The Masses and Punch. ( Wikipedia)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.

Set your recording software to:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording. If this is your first recording, you'll also find this Newbie Guide to Recording useful.
Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
In Darkest Africa by Charles Harold Herford, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
At evening when the lamp is lit,
The tired Human People sit
And doze, or turn with solemn looks
The speckled pages of their books.

Then I, the Dangerous Kitten, prowl
And in the Shadows softly growl,
And roam about the farthest floor
Where Kitten never trod before.

And, crouching in the jungle damp,
I watch the Human Hunter’s camp,
Ready to spring with fearful roar
As soon as I shall hear them snore.

And then with stealthy tread I crawl
Into the dark and trackless hall,
Where ’neath the Hat-tree’s shadows deep
Umbrellas fold their wings and sleep.

A cuckoo calls—and to their dens
The People climb like frightened hens,
And I’m alone—and no one cares
In Darkest Africa—down stairs.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.
Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:
File name - all in lowercase: africa_herford_your initials in lowercase_128kb.mp3
(e.g. africa_herford_klh_128kb.mp3 )

ID3 tags (Version 2.30): ID Tags are completed during Cataloging

*Readers, please check back in a day or so for any feedback regarding your reading.

*Best to copy the filename provided above into the LV Uploader, inserting your initials of course.

Welcome to lIbriVox Megan, good first reading, but there are a few tech issues to sort out...
- the file is in stereo, we need a mono file (set in Edit/Preferences/Devises/Recording/Chennels)
- the bitrate is 320 kbps and we need a bitrate of 128 kbps (this is set when you save/export to mp3)
- the volume is low at 79.5 dB. You should aim for your waveforms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:

Image

You can check your volume using our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker You will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab. For your information, we look for around 89 dB (87-91 is OK) (all the other tech specs are there also)
- at 1:01 in your recording I hear "And I’m not alone—and no one cares" the text reads "And I’m alone—and no one cares"
- please include the file duration with your upload link
Could you make these corrections and upload please, use the same filename.

*Please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the LV catalog and if you have one, we can put your personal URL link on your catalog page too.

Welcome to Librivox smccaroni, good first reading. :D
- All specs are correct, please include the file length when posting your upload link
- the opening instructions ask for initials in the filename, I've renamed your file _sm in the Magic Window and uploader.
*Please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the LV catalog and if you have one, we can put your personal URL link on your catalog page too.

The specs are correct, but we need lowercase initials in the filename for cataloging purposes.
Your volume is a bit high at 95.8 dB. You should aim for your waveforms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:

Thank you Chad, there is just one item you may wish to correct, at 0:17 I hear "And dozen, or turn with solemn looks" the text reads "And doze, or turn with solemn looks" :)

Thanks for the corrections, I wasn't sure about the initials. I think I will stick with smccaroni.
Thanks again!

Mine is 1.33. Why are pets usually at their cutest when they're being naughty?
