This project is now complete! All files can be found at https://librivox.org/the-public-orations-of-demosthenes/

The Public Orations of Demosthenes by Demosthenes (384 BCE - 322 BCE). Translated by Arthur Wallace Pickard-Cambridge (1873 - 1952)

Volunteers outside the USA: Arthur Wallace Pickard-Cambridge died in 1952. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955) or Canada (author's death plus 50 years), UNLESS the rule of shorter term applies.
This book, originally published in two volumes, collects the most important complete public orations by Demosthenes, arguably the most famous Athenian orator, that we still have access to. Demosthenes was a Greek statesman and orator of ancient Athens. His orations are nowadays important sources of contemporary Athenian oratorical expression and provide an insight into the politics and legal affairs of Athens during the 4th century BC. (Summary by Leni)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/9060 http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/9061 but I have provided links in the window for easier access
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi, I'd like to claim the introduction?

Good evening all,

I would very much like to record a section for this project.

However, as I am located in Ireland I would like to determine whether I would be permitted to do so or not

I would appreciate it the satiation could be clarified.

Many thanks,

Sláinte,

Aiken

Hello, Aiken

Thanks for asking. I am not a copyright expert by any means, but I understand that Ireland has the same copyright laws as the EU, which means this book would not be public domain, since the translator died in 1952, so, if the law is 70 years after death of the author, this would be PD on January 1st 2023. Unless the rule of shorter term applies, but of that, I am not sure.

Hello, and welcome to Librivox. Since this would be your first recording, we strongly suggest you do the 1-minute test (https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=1-Minute_Test). Thanks!

Hey all! Here's section three:

Section three: https://librivox.org/uploads/leni/publicorations_03_demosthenes_128kb.mp3 (duration: 18:03)

(N.B. Although I have a British accent I am currently working in America. If, however, this remains a problem because of the copyright issue, please feel free to delete the recording.)

If there's anything that needs correcting, please just let me know!

Hello Leni!

I have finished recording Section 01 of Public Orations, here is the link: https://librivox.org/uploads/leni/publicorations_01_demosthenes_128kb.mp3. The recording length is 23' 45".

As this is my first recording, I am still working through settings and trying to improve the audio quality; let me know if you have any advice for getting the most out of the hardware/software.

I would like to be credited as Roger Serling on the Catalog page. Thank You!

Sincerely,

- R
