The Diary of a Country Parson by James Woodforde (1740 - 1781). Edited by John Beresford. (1888-1940)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-diary-of-a-country-parson-by-james-woodforde/

The Revd. James Woodforde was an English clergyman, best known for his vivid account of parish life in the 18th century. His diary, edited by John Beresford, remained unpublished until the 20th century. The diary provides a wonderfully full account of the small community in which the diarist lived — of the births and deaths, comings and goings, illnesses, and annual celebrations, along with many other details of daily life.
As a churchman, Woodforde himself was conscientious by the standards of his time, charitable and pious without being sanctimonious and again typical of his day, deeply suspicious of enthusiasm.
The value of the diary to the historian lies in the wealth of primary source material it provides, while the general reader can bring from it the authentic flavor of 18th-century English country life. ( Wikipedia and John Greenman)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.227134
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): wordperfect

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Section [number] of The Diary of a Country Parson. This is a LibriVox recording. Read by John Greenman. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • Say:
"The Diary of a Country Parson, by James Woodforde. Edited by John Beresford. [Section][number]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Section [number] of The Diary of a Country Parson by James Woodforde. Edited by John Beresford. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain. Read by John Greenman"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Section title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
"End of [Section] Read by John Greenman"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Diary of a Country Parson, by James Woodforde. Edited by John Beresford."

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename diaryofacountryparson_##_woodforde_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. diaryofacountryparson_01_woodforde_128kb.mp3)

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: TriciaG

And I'm still not sure how many sections there will be...but I'm working on it.

This will need ABOUT 50 sections....hopefully, no more (depending on the length of each section)
I think it will be necessary to make each year into a "section".

Sorry - I just set it up. :)

John - You have "Woodford" rather than "Woodforde" in several places. Is this on purpose? I can't find anywhere where the last E isn't included.

I've made some changes to the opening template...added the "e" and changed my announcements a little bit.

YAY!!!
All Aboard!!!

I've started the MW and find there are a few extra rows at the end...which is FINE...since, it's POSSIBLE that some years might end up being "part one" and "Part two"

:-)

this is going  :D  to be a "ride"!!!!

first correction!!
It appears that this book only goes to 1881!!!
So, for now, we can just leave the MW as is!!!
but get rid of the rows after 1881, when we get close to finishing
