PL OK. All the time I was reading about the food supply becoming insufficient I was thinking - but what about superphosphates (those brought from Chile and the later synthetic ones?) And trade with the British colonies? The grain ships that made their way round Cape Horn from Australia? What about the produce of the Canadian prairies?
