I think Foote went a bit overboard with his grammatical pedantry here. For example, he criticised Hughes for translating "mariage de convenance" as "marriage of convenience", but that's the translation I got when I tried an internet search. I wonder how Foote would have rendered it.

When it comes to Foote's grammatical perfectionism and also his richness of vocabulary, I really consider it almost unbelievable. Haven't come upon such a writing articulation in a while, especially for a nonfiction. (:
