Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797 - 1851).
This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalogue page: https://librivox.org/frankenstein-or-the-modern-prometheus-version-4-by-mary-wollstonecraft-shelley/

This is a classic (gothic) horror story, and one of the earliest examples of science fiction. The main characters are Dr. Frankenstein and his creation, the daemon. Shelley called the scientist a "pale student of unhallowed arts" and his creation a "hideous phantasm of a man." This story is not only delightfully frightful, but arguably represents one of the clearest criticisms of science during a time when, like the daemon, it was leaving its own infancy and, like Dr. Frankenstein, testing its ethical boundaries. As Shelley said, "Frightful must it be; for supremely frightful would be the effect of any human endeavour to mock the stupendous mechanism of the Creator of the world. His success would terrify the artist; he would rush away from his odious handywork, horror-stricken." (jvanstan)

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Sections 6, 7, 8, and 10 through 14 are PL OK.

Section 9 PL notes:

8:43 compromised/comprised in the passage, "“You may easily believe,” said he, “how great was the difficulty to persuade my father that all necessary knowledge was not comprised in the noble art of book-keeping;..."

Sections 15 through 20 are pl ok. This is really good. I picked up the story from the Kenneth Branagh film treatment, but the book gives so much more nuance to the feelings and"thoughts of "the daemon" though his decisions over the child victim and Justine diminish my sympathy for him.

Awesome, thanks Patty Marie! Yeah, the book is way better than any of the movie adaptations. And, it is a fascinating to ponder how/why/when we sympathize with the daemon versus Frankenstein... or, how different is the creator from the created when all is stripped away? :hmm:

I got all the remaining sections ready

Hope all is well!

Section 9 and sections 21 through 27 are PL OK. I had listened into section 25 but hadn't come to report on them. I'll proof the last two before the weekend is over.

Sections 28 and 29 are PL OK. :9: Apparently film makers added some rather silly macabre episodes in Geneva before the end; glad to know Mary Shelley had better taste.
